Surface Pro 9 is slow and laggy

hello, my surface pro 9 has been really slow and lagging in clicking & loading anything recently. it's not exactly new either (5 months or so) and I'm a student using my laptop for assignments & tests, so i can't afford for it to be slow.

in the task manager, the cpu's speed (1.25-1.5 GHz) is going much slower than its base speed of 2.5 GHz (for some reason I can't include a screenshot). i've tried changing its power mode from 'Recommended' to 'Better' and 'Best' performance which makes it normal for a few minutes, then goes right back to being slow again in a short time. i've tried updating my system, restarting, closing all unnecessary applications or background tasks, and i still have this problem. can anyone help?

I just bought a Brand New Surface Pro 9 i7 16GB 256GB right from Microsoft.

Ive owned it for a week, no matter what settings I tweak, or files deleted, and defender anti virus, its ridiculously slow & laggy

I wanted this tablet to replace a 5 year old iPad.

The iPad runs faster with zero lag. Its just a better piece of hardware, that costs $400 is 5yrs old. Compared to Microsofts $1,200 surface pro 9 i7, that is a week old.

Non of the recommendations listed above has done anything to fix the Slow performance, and touch screen Lag response, on a brand new Surface Pro 9 i7 16GB.

I bought a Microsoft - Surface Pro 9 - 13" Touch-Screen - Intel Core i5 - 16GB Memory - 256GB SSD with Surface Pro Keyboard - Graphite on February 03, 2024. The device is slow and laggy, as well as the screen give flicks randomly after few hours of usage, the battery backup is very poor, which is very unexpected from a device from this price point, specially from the particular brand. I tried all of the things you mentioned above, didn't make any difference. I require your attention on my device please. Thank you.

After two months and I still have this problem. Where is the promised update that was posted here in the forum somewhere? Many people with the same problem. Feels a bit surreal to think that an expensive Surface is lagging just after its release and cannot handle a simple sleep and wake up.

    Hi nutshellling

Thank you for reaching out in the Microsoft Community. I apologize that you’re encountering performance problems with your Surface Pro 9. Below, I’ve outlined steps you can take to enhance its performance.

    1. Check for updates: Make sure your Surface Pro 9 is up to date with the latest Windows updates and firmware updates. You can do this by going to Settings > Windows Update>check for update.
    2. Run the Surface Diagnostic Toolkit: This tool can help identify and fix common issues with your Surface device. You can download it from the Microsoft website.
    3. If you are using the Surface Pro9 Intel processor, please download and install the driver pack on the Surface device. To update the hardware on your Surface.
    4. Check for malware: Run a full scan of your Surface Pro 9 using Windows Defender or another reputable antivirus software to check for any malware that may be causing performance issues.
    5. Adjust power settings: You mentioned that you've tried changing the power mode, but you may also want to adjust the advanced power settings. Go to Control Panel > Power Options > Change plan settings > Change advanced power settings. From there, you can adjust settings like processor power management and system cooling policy.
    6. We will clean and delete temp files. Open the Windows 11 settings menu> Navigate to System > Storage > Temporary Files.> Check the boxes for the temporary cache files you want to delete.> Click “Remove Files”.> Confirm when prompted, and your cache will be cleared.
    7. Disk Cleanup: Open the Windows 11 search box on the taskbar.> Type “Disk Cleanup” and select it from the search results. Click “Clean up system files”>Choose Temporary Files, Temporary Internet Files, and Windows Update Clean-up files.
    8. Storage Settings: Open Settings> Click on System> Select Storage on the right side> Click “Temporary files "Choose the junk files you want to delete from Windows 11.

If the issue persists, we will do this step.

    1. Press Windows button + R then type MSconfig> then press enter.
    2. Then click on boot Tab>Then click on advance options.
    3. Then put a check mark under Number of processors>Then click the arrow down and select the highest number.
    4. Then click on okay> then apply> okay. Then restart the Surface to apply changes.

Thanks again for choosing Microsoft. Hope this helps!

    Kind regards

    Christopher
