Surface Pro 7 overheating

Ik starting to regret buying the surface pro 7. I had the previous surface pro with an m3 processor. It was really slow which is why I upgraded to the newer surface pro 7 with an i5 processor. When i run word and chrome and i mean just word and chrom, the laptop heats so much. I bought this while visiting the usa so i could use it for studies in India. They had told us the laptop is capable of handling basic tasks. But the heating is too much and that causes severe lag. Waste of money. It has been almost a year since purchase.

Same problem with overheating... Bought i5 version during winter so few months looked ok ... But during spring it had started to be unusable... (As temperatures were rising)...

Just teams calls can make it so hot that it slows down so much that opening blank excel can freeze system 😔

Once i had to put it into freezer for 10 minutes so i could continue with my business call ...

I agree. I just purchased my Pro 7 2 days ago and will be taking it back. For the cost if this device, I should not be experiencing all of these issues. I called Microsoft support and got disconnected twice with no call back. I'm done!

@AnirudhSubramanian, I too purchased my Surface Pro 7 from the USA.

I was facing issues with the battery and Microsoft was kind enough to replace my device as it was purchased on the Microsoft Store. THIS HOWEVER TOOK 2 MONTHS TO PROCESS FROM THE DATE I SPOKE TO THEM AND THEY APPROVED THE REPLACEMENT.

Last week I finally got a refurbished device as a replacement.

The device looked new, 0 charge cycles, however, the Full Charge Capacity shows 44,500 while the design capacity shows 43200.

This didn't seem to be a problem to me, however, a day later, the CPU randomly throttles to 400mhz rendering the laptop unusable. It randomly kicks in and is most annoying. There are also times when the battery stops charging once it reaches 74%-77%. Plugged in, not discharging, not charging either. I have reset the OS twice. Done a fresh install once. Done an in place upgrade. I have even restored the surface factory image, but nothing seems to fix this

@DreyaAC - If your device is new, please take it back to where you bought it from and replace for a brand new. If you go through Microsoft surface, you will get a crappy refurbished device like mine.

    Hi AnirudhSubramanian,

Thank you for reaching Microsoft Community.

I'm sorry to hear abut your experience on your Surface Pro 7. Definitely, this is not the experience we want you to have. Yes, the Surface Pro 7 should be capable of handling basic tasks. Please run these steps on your Surface Pro 7 and see if the issue persist:

1: Run Surface Diagnostic Toolkit and check Windows Update

    2: Update drivers and firmware

Check what is the current OS Build of your Windows version by going to Settings > System > About.

Go to Download driver and firmware for Surface, choose Surface Pro 7 then click Download on the next page.

Choose the .msi file that matches your current OS Build and click Next.

After downloading, run and install the .msi then Restart.

3: Run System File Checker Tool in Windows 10

    Hope this helps.
