USB-C to HDMI from Surface Dock 2 - No Display

I have a surface laptop (1st gen) connected to a Surface Dock 2.

I have a usb-c to HDMI cable connected to the dock, with the HDMI plugged into an Asus VG245H Monitor.

The Laptop recognizes a connection, but the monitor says there is no signal.

Under Devices and Printers, the monitor is displayed as VG245, however there is also a Billboard device showing next to the Surface Dock 2 under "unspecified".

Under Display settings, it shows that the external monitor is detected and I can chose to extend or duplicate the display.  Despite everything though, I can't get a signal to be received by the  external monitor.  I confirmed the monitor works by using the mini display port, direct to the monitor.  This worked fine.  Any ideas?

Any update on this? i have a surface book3 with a surface dock 2. My monitors are HDMI. I've used 2 different brands of HDMI to USB-C adapters, including an active adapter. And different cables. I cannot get the monitors to get a signal. Also, Windows reports that it  can't send enough power to my USB device , when i plug in a monitor.   If i plug directly into the surface book via USB-C, it works fine. Just not through the dock. Everything is updated.

I can try to help since I had the same issue, although it was not on the Surface tab but on the HP Elitebook and the external monitor is Lenovo Q27q-10. OS is Win 10 Enterprise 64 bit.

I found the clue while browsing through the advise at website: https://www.vssmonitoring.com/2nd-monitor-detected-but-not-displaying/

What caught my attention is the sentence there saying: "If your second monitor is detected but not displaying, sometimes it’s just a setting messing things up. Look into your “Display Settings” by right-clicking on an empty area within your desktop. Find the detection button and Windows will automatically try to detect the monitor. ".

In summary, the exact steps I followed:

    1. Go to Display Settings (you can go there by doing a right clicking on an empty area within desktop)
    2. Select the Monitor (in my case, it was monitor 2)
    3. Try clicking Identify (It did not help me)
    4. Go to "Advanced Display Settings" at the bottom of the page
    5. Click on "Display adapter properties for display-2"
    6. Go to Monitor tab
    7. Select a different screen refresh rate (in my case, 60 Hertz worked even though my monitor is 75 Hertz)

    Hope this helps.

    Best Regards,

    Saurabh Gour

I ran through the troubleshooting and then applied the registry settings and reboot.  After attaching the dock, then monitor, it worked.... once.  I closed my surface laptop to use the external monitor and it went out again.  I've reapplied the registry settings and rebooted a couple times, but it won't work again.  Surely it can't be this hard to plug into a dock and use an external monitor.

I am having the same issues with a surface pro 6.  My old dock or the cable died.  Docking station 2 only has the usbc display and not the minidisplay port.  I am unable to get either of two monitors to work.  Both work when using the minidisplay port on the Surface pro 6.  I have tried the registry download and it did not work.

I am having the exact same issue.  I tried the registry settings and got everything working actually after an hour of applying/reapplying the settings and trying the registry clearing methods.  Thought I had it solved.  Then this morning I hooked up the computer to the dock and was back to where I started.

    I have a Surface Laptop 2 -> Surface dock 2 -> Uni USB-C/HMI cable (4k, 60Hz) -> dual Dell 24" monitors.

    ~~

BTW, I use dual monitors (same Dell models) all the time with my work computer (Suface Pro 4 and surface dock and kensington docks with no problem).  My gut feeling is it is something with the Dock 2.

Thanks for any other advice you can provide.

    Regards,

    Tom
