    Hi Peter Morris1,

Thank you for reaching Microsoft Community. Based on your description, I understand that you are having trouble changing the display resolution back to its previous setting on one of the external monitors connected to your Surface Pro 9 running on Windows 11.

Before anything else, we would like to ask for a few more details on this for us to further understand and isolate the issue:

    • When you say you can't change the screen resolution back to its previous setting, do you mean that the Display resolution section is greyed out when you go to Settings > System > Display then select the external monitor you would like to change resolution then go to Display resolution section? or you are able to change the setting but the display on the monitor does not change at all?
    • How many external monitors are connected to the Surface and how are they connected to the Surface?
    • Which Surface Pro 9 configuration do you have? Intel or 5G?

To troubleshoot, kindly try these steps first:

    1. Go to Settings > System > Display.
    2. Select the monitor that is having an issue then scroll down and select "Advanced display settings".
    3. Click on "Display adapter properties for Display X" (where X is the number of the display you want to change the resolution for).
    4. In the "Adapter" tab, click on "List All Modes".
    5. Select the desired resolution from the list and click "OK".
    6. Click "Apply" and then "Keep changes" to save the new resolution.

If the above steps do not work, you may need to update your graphics driver. To do this, follow these steps:

    1. Right-click on the Start button and select "Device Manager".
    2. Expand the "Display adapters" category.
    3. Right-click on your graphics card and select "Update driver".
    4. Select "Search automatically for updated driver software" and follow the on-screen instructions.

Let me know how it goes and we may recommend other troubleshooting steps once we have received your responses to the questions above or if we need you to refer to the support that suits your problem. We will be sure to let you know in advance so that you save time.

    Kind regards,
    Marrion

    Hi Marrion,

I tried both options suggested by you, to no avail...

Option 1 - When I got to all modes the only options available to me were:

    a) 640 by 480, True Colour (32bit), 59 Hertz

    b) 640 by 480, True Colour (32bit), 60 Hertz

    Option 2

When I got to "search all drivers for updated driver software", the response was:

"Windows has determined that the best driver for this device is already installed. Ther may be better driver on the Windows update or on the device manufacturers website.

    "Intel(R) Iris(R) Graphics

    Any other thoughts?

    Cheers

    Hi Peter Morris1,

Thank you for the response and for the details. Sorry to hear though that issue persists, and the steps suggested did not work. Let us proceed with mor steps to take and see how this goes.

First, kindly try checking for the Surface drivers' health through the Surface app and run the Surface Diagnostic Toolkit to run some system checks and repairs. See: Fix common Surface problems using the Surface app and Surface Diagnostic Toolkit - Microsoft Support

If still issue persists, proceed clearing the display cache of the device by running the tool provided on this page: Troubleshoot connecting Surface to an external display - Microsoft Support under Solution 9.

    Kind regards,
    Marrion
