How to update Wireless Display Adapter drivers without needing to download the app?

I have a 1628 wireless display adapter that is giving my coworkers and I a hard time. It won't stay connected to the device that has paired to it. All of the computers are up to date and running either Windows 10 or 11. Our IT Admin does not want to give us access to the Microsoft Store to download the app to update its drivers or firmware. Is there a different way to update the firmware?

    Hi Drake E. De Haan,

Thank you for reaching Microsoft Community. We appreciate for sharing your concern to us.

Unfortunately, updating the firmware for wireless display adapters can only be done using the Microsoft Wireless Display Adapter app, which must be installed from the Microsoft Store.

If you experience problems with your wireless display adapter, we recommend that you follow the solutions provided in this article Troubleshooting Microsoft Wireless Display Adapter - Microsoft Support.

You can speak with your IT administrator for more help in downloading the app if the firmware needs to be updated, by using another PC if necessary.

    Kind regards,

    Lavenia

    Hello,

I am guessing there is still no option to update the device without the app?

Because I have now downloaded the app on 14 different devices and none of them can connect for longer than a half second. These devices are running either Windows 10 or Windows 11.

This seems like a massive oversight that there would not be another method to update. My device is now effectively non-functional.

This is a Catch 22. We had a Windows 10 pc that was able to connect to our Windows Display Adapters with Miracast and were able to update the firmware. After the firmware was updated, all of our Windows 11 computers could connect to the display. Quite honestly, after the update, it worked very well.

The catch is that if you have a Windows 11 pc and are unable to connect to the adapter, you are not able to update the firmware. Sort of a a circular issue. I can't connect because the firmware is not up to date. But, I can't update the firmware because I can't connect.

I'm an Electrical Engineer and this doesn't look like good product development. We should always have a back door (either through the HDMI port or the USB connector, to connect with the device and update the firmware. Or, it is useless when the firmware is out of date.

Same issue. Whoever thought of the idea of only being able to update it through the APP once it's connected, wasn't very smart. I have tried multiple receivers with the same issue. Won't stay connected long enough for me to hit update. Just loops over and over again.
