takes too long to reinstall apps and setting.

plan to buy new surface go in the future and reset this older one at that time.

    thank you.

    Hello the-emperor,

Thanks for reaching out to Microsoft Community. I'm sorry to hear about this issue on your device. I understand how important this feature is for you to find the device.

If I may ask, when you used this feature, was your device connected to the internet? Technically, if you turned on this feature, make sure your Windows device is connected to the internet, Location in settings is turned on, has enough battery power so it can send its location, and that you're signed in to the device using your Microsoft account.

But now, if the toggle is greyed out then there might be an issue related to its system software. In the meantime, please give these methods a try first and see if it helps.

Force a shut down and restart your Surface

    • Press and hold down the power button until your Surface shuts down and restarts and you see the Windows logo screen (about 20 seconds), then release the power button.

    Run the Surface Diagnostic Toolkit

    • In the search box on the taskbar, type Surface Diagnostic Toolkit, then select it in the list of results.
If it's not already installed, you can download it from the Microsoft Store.
    • Follow the on-screen instructions in the Surface Diagnostic Toolkit.

Update Windows. Ensure all pending updates are installed.

    • Check for Windows updates. Select Start > Settings > Windows Update.

    Perform a clean boot

    • Sign in to the device as an administrator. If you are unsure if your account has administrator rights, see Create a local user or administrator account in Windows to find out how to see if your account has administrator rights, and grant them to your account, if necessary.
    • Select Search, type msconfig , and then select System Configuration from the list of results.
    • On the Servicestab of System Configuration, select Hide all Microsoft services, and then select Disable all. Select Apply.
    • On the Startuptab of System Configuration, select Open Task Manager.
    • On the Startuptab in Task Manager, for each Enabledstartup item, select the item and then select Disable. (Keep track of which items have been Disabled. You will need to know this later.)
    • Close Task Manager. Then, on the Startuptab of System Configuration, select OK. When you restart the computer, it will be in a clean boot environment. Follow troubleshooting steps to install, uninstall, or run your application. Your computer might temporarily lose some functionality while in a clean boot environment. Reset the computer to start normally after clean boot troubleshooting and resume functionality.

Let me know how it goes. I look forward to hearing from you soon.

    Regards,

    StevenK
