How does one fix mouse cursor choppy lag on Surface Laptop Studio 2

I have the new Surface Laptop Studio 2 and every few minutes the mouse cursor gets really choppy and laggy for about 10-15 seconds. For context, this happens even when there are no applications running or windows open. It also happens both when using the trackpad and when using wireless mice. However, I’ve noticed it only happens on the SLS2 screen. If I’m docked using dual monitors and it’s lagging on the SLS2 screen, the instant the cursor moves to the monitor screen the lagging stops. Likewise if I’m only using the cursor on an external monitor the lagging never occurs. Also, I’ve made sure all the drivers are updated.

I found out that the iCloud application was causing my issue. I was not logging into the iCloud app, and I guess something about that caused the jitters after sleeping and coming back on.

Once I logged into the app, the issue went away.

If you're experiencing choppy or laggy mouse cursor movement on your Surface Laptop Studio 2, there are several potential solutions you can try. Here are some steps you can take to address this issue:

    1. Update Graphics Drivers: Ensure that your graphics drivers are up-to-date. You can do this through the device manager or by visiting the manufacturer's website.
    2. Windows Updates: Make sure that your operating system is fully updated. Sometimes, Microsoft releases updates that include fixes for various issues, including performance improvements.
    3. Check Power Settings: Ensure that your power settings are optimized for performance. Sometimes, power-saving settings can impact the performance of your system.
      • Open the "Power & sleep" settings.
      • Choose "Additional power settings."
      • Select the "High performance" power plan.
    4. Adjust Cursor Settings: Try adjusting the cursor settings to see if it makes a difference.
      • Open "Settings" and go to "Devices."
      • Under the "Devices" tab, click on "Mouse."
      • Adjust the cursor speed and see if it improves the lag.
    5. Check for Background Processes: Excessive background processes can impact system performance. Use the Task Manager to see if any processes are consuming a significant amount of resources.
      • Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
      • Check the "Processes" tab for any resource-intensive applications.
    6. Disable Special Mouse Features: Some mice come with additional features that may interfere with normal cursor movement. Try disabling any special features in your mouse settings.
    7. Adjust Visual Effects: Windows has various visual effects that may impact performance. Adjusting these settings might help.
      • Right-click on "This PC" or "My Computer" and select "Properties."
      • Click on "Advanced system settings."
      • Under the "Advanced" tab, click on "Settings" under the "Performance" section.
      • Choose "Adjust for best performance" or manually disable certain effects.
    8. Check for Malware: Perform a thorough scan for malware using your antivirus software. Malware can affect system performance.
    9. Reset Mouse Settings: Resetting your mouse settings to default may resolve any conflicts or misconfigurations.
    10. Contact Support: If the issue persists, consider reaching out to Microsoft Support or the Surface support team. There might be specific issues with your device that require professional assistance.

I have face this kind of problem while playing apk games on my pc with my mouse so, i make the above mention changes to make my mouse performance better.

    Hi NCR27,

Thank you for posting in Microsoft Community.

I understand that you’re experiencing choppy mouse cursor lag on your Surface Laptop Studio 2. Let’s troubleshoot this issue together! Allow me to ask some questions so we can further isolate the issue.

    • What Windows version, edition and OS build
    • Does the issue occur when the mouse or left idles for a few seconds then when you use it again, it becomes choppy lag for a few seconds then works again or it randomly occurs even if you are in the middle of using the mouse or touchpad?

Here are some steps you can try to fix the issue:

    1. Restart Your PC and Reconnect your wireless mouse. Press and hold down the power button until your Surface shuts down and restarts and you see the Windows logo screen (about 20 seconds), then release the power button.
      • For Bluetooth wireless mice, remove and then reconnect the mouse:
        • Press Windows logo + I to open Settings.
        • Select Bluetooth & devices.
        • Find your mouse device, click the three dots, and choose Remove device.
        • Turn on your mouse and click Add device to reconnect it.
    2. Check for updates: Ensure that your device is up to date with the latest Windows updates and firmware. You can do this by going to Settings > Windows Update > Check for updates. You may also check optional updates available.
    3. Run Surface Diagnostic Toolkit See: Fix common Surface problems using the Surface Diagnostic Toolkit (microsoft.com)
    4. Run a full system scan: Malware or viruses can cause issues with your device’s performance. You can run a full system scan by using Windows Defender. See Stay protected with Windows Security - Microsoft Support.

Let me know how it goes.

    Kind regards,

    Lavenia
