Surface Pro 4 won't boot to usb, windows or pxe

I have a Surface that will display the Windows logo very briefly and then disappear, no other action takes place. I cannot get to Windows, a command prompt, pxe or bios. I have read many articles but none are working. It has power so it is not a battery problem. I've held down the power button to force a shutdown, held down the volume down and power but the results are always the same. The logo flashes, disappears and then it is a black screen. Is there anything I can try to get this back up and running?

Thank you

    Hi there

I discovered my problem was with the motherboard, and fortunately the device is still under warranty so I have sent it in for repairs.

    thank you

Did you manage to resolve this?

Like numerous others, I'm having the same problem. Microsoft seem to be refusing to take accountability and are simply not helping.

Thank you for the response; however, I cannot get to the bios/firmware settings although I know it is set to boot from the usb as the first choice because that is the last way it was setup before I could no longer boot it up. I downloaded the recovery drive to the usb and have verified that it works by using another Surface Pro. It boots to the usb recovery drive fine on a working computer. My trouble is that the device only briefly displays the Windows Logo black screen, never does it show three dots or the word Surface. It flashes the Windows Logo and then disappears but does not boot from the usb. It appears to shutdown after the power on. I have tried to get into the bios and to the recovery but cannot. The device is plugged in and the tip of the charger is illuminated. I have left it sitting for hours to make sure it is charged. I have tried booting to usb while plugged in and while unplugged...same result.

    Hi StephanieChambers1,

Thanks for reaching out to Microsoft Community and posting your inquiry.

This issue could be caused by corrupted Windows system. Try going to the Firmware Settings > Turn off your device > Press and hold the volume up then press the power button for 15 seconds > On firmware settings , look for Boot Configuration > Find the USB Storage > Slide it up to the first position, this will force the system to recognize the USB first when booting.

Then, proceed with the USB recovery image. This process will wipe everything out on your device and install a fresh operating system. Please make sure that you have back up your files and data either in an External Hard drive or use your OneDrive app. You’ll need a USB (USB stick) with at least 16GB/32 GB and format it clean (make sure that you have chosen FAT32 as the file system while formatting the USB). You'll need a PC running Windows 10 or Surface Device to download the system files/recovery image on the Microsoft Website.    Note: USB/Flash drives are the only required device for you to perform the follow steps below successfully.• Download the System Files or Recovery Image:

    1. Go to the Download a recovery image for your Surface.
    2. If you’re signed in with your Microsoft account, you will be prompt to choose the device from the list of devices on your Microsoft Account. If you’re not signed in, choose a product on the drop-down menu and provide the Serial Number of the device.
    3. Once the download is finished, go to the file, right-click and choose Extract all then choose the USB/Flash drive.

    • Perform the USB recovery:

    1. Shutdown the device by pressing/holding the power button for 10 seconds until it’s off.
    2. Insert the USB recovery drive into the USB port.
    3. Press and hold the volume-down (-) rocker.
    4. Press and release the power button.
    5. When the Surface logo appears, release the volume-down (-) rocker.
    6. Choose your language options and keyboard layout.
      7. Select Troubleshoot.
    7. Select Recover from a Drive. Choose Remove Everything and Fully Clean the Drive. Recovering this PC. If prompted for BitLocker Key, tap Skip this Drive.
    8. Select “Recovery”.

Keep us updated about the issue by replying on this thread.

    Kind regards,

    John Neil_J
