HI

I came back from Xmas leave and plugged my suface 7+ into my external monitor via the usb-c to HDMI adapter as normal, but the monitor is not being recognised.

I have checked the monitor with just the hdmi cable through a standard laptop and it works fine.

I have tried usign the adapter with a usb adapter through the other port on my surface - but no joy!!

Any suggestions or help?

Tony

    Hi Tony,

Thank you for posting in Microsoft Community.

I am aware that you're having trouble connecting your Surface Pro 7+ to your external monitor. I am here to help and let us work on this together. Allow me to ask some questions to help me further isolate the issue.

    • May I know the make and model of the external monitor you have used?
    • What build version of Windows you are currently running?
    • Does your monitor show no signal or just black screen?

Here are a few troubleshooting steps you can try:

    1. Force the device to shut down and restart to clear hardware cache. Press and hold down the power button until your Surface shuts down and restarts and you see the Windows logo screen (about 20 seconds), then release the power button.
    2. Update your Surface Pro 7+ to the latest version of Windows and install any available updates for your adapter. Go to Settings > Windows updates > Check for updates. You may also check optional updates available.
    3. Power reset your external display by unplugging it from the power outlet and then plugging it back in.
    4. Check the video input settings on your external display. Make sure that it is set to the current port, which should be HDMI in your case.
    5. Clear your display cache: Here's how:
      1. Disconnect the monitor from your Surface.
      2. Download the Surface Dock registry file. Choose to Openthe file. This file will clear your cache, whether you have a dock or not.
      3. Select and run surface dock registry.reg.
      4. Select Yesto allow changes to your Surface, select Yesto confirm, and then select OKto close.
      5. Restart your Surface, reconnect the Dock and/or monitors, and try your external display again.

For other troubleshooting guide, see Troubleshoot connecting Surface to an external display - Microsoft Support.

If none of these steps resolve the issue, kindly give answers to the above questions so we can further isolate your issue and formulate appropriate troubleshooting steps.

I hope to hear back from you soon.

    Kind regards,

    Lavenia

    HI Lavenia,

    the problem has 'fixed' itself.

The latest updates seemed to have solved the problem.

From what I read on other pages relating ot this issue a lot of repsonses seemed to point to an update just before the issue occured.

But as I said the issue has righted itself with the latest update, so hopefully it doesnt occur in the future again!

    Thanks

    Tony

I look forward to hearing from you.

    Hi Lavenia,

    thank you for the advice.

The Surface is actually my boss's device.

And I havent had a chance to get looking at it yet to implement the fixes you have suggested.

I will reply next week once I have had a chance to try them.

    Tony
