Has anyone successfully connected a Surface Pro 4 to a 4k monitor using a mDP to HDMI cable?

I have a Surface Pro 4 i7 16GB with Windows 10 20H2 and the Samsung LU32J590 which is a 32" 4K monitor.

I cannot get 4k (3840 x 2160) resolution using mDP to HDMI cable, but I can achieve 4k if I use mDP to DP

I have also tried using mDP to HDMI converter with a HDMI cable, that too would not give m 4k, instead the resolution is restricted to 2736 x 1824 which is the Surface Pro 4 native resolution.

Tried the HDMI connection on another 4k monitor and could not get it to work. Which means monitors with built-in speakers are not accessible via the HDMI interface unless you are happy with the native resolution of 2736 x 1824.

Is this a limitation on the Surface Pro 4?

    Hello SaefurRahman,

Thanks for reaching Microsoft Community and posting your concern here.

Most HDMI cables especially HDMI 2.0 can handle current 4K content, but would still depend with the max resolution and refresh rate that your device could only get. May I know what processor does your Surface have? If you have Surface Pro 4 with Core M processor it could get a maximum resolution of 3840 x 2160 with a max refresh rate of 60Hz for one external display. On the other hand, for Surface Pro 4 with i5 or i7 processor it could get a max resolution of 4096 x 2304 and still max refresh rate of 60Hz connected to one external monitor. If you have one of these processors, please see Troubleshoot connecting Surface to a second screen for more details and troubleshooting.

Hope this helps. Otherwise, don't hesitate to respond to this thread if there’s anything else that needs to be addressed.

    Regards,
    StevenK

I have an i7 processor as shown below.

If I connect the Surface Pro to my monitor using a mDP to HDMI cable the best resolution I can achieve is 2736 x 1824.

If however I connect the Surface Pro to my monitor using a mDP to DPI can achieve the max resolution of 3840 x 2160.

I have tried other 4k monitors and I have the same issue leaving me to think that the Surface Pro 4 cannot achieve 4k via HDMI

Troubleshoot connecting Surface to a second screen (microsoft.com) states:

For monitors that support DisplayPort If your monitor supports DisplayPort, we recommend that you use a Mini DisplayPort-to-DisplayPort cable that’s no more than 6 feet (1.8 meters) long. DisplayPort will allow you to use the highest supported resolution and refresh rate with your Surface.

Also, cables make a difference. You need an Active cable - Microsoft currently recommends Buy Surface Mini DisplayPort to HDMI 2.0 Adapter  - Microsoft Store - but there is no guarantee that this will provide the same resolution/refresh as MDP to DP.
