I'm having the exact issue. Randomly charging/not charging. Tried with different plugs, sometime worked.
Surface Pro 6 randomly stops charging
Charging has become extremely temperamental. Sometimes it charges, sometimes it does not. Plugging into different outlets sometimes solves this issue, again other times this has no effect. I have followed every online tech support route I have been able to find all to no effect, nothing has solved this issue. Microsoft have shut all of their stores in my area so the only recourse seems to be to ship my surface and/or charger at my expense to be repaired or replaced and so be without the device that I rely on so heavily for my university studies. How long will this process take? who even knows there is no estimation. This is absolutely unacceptable, for the amount your forfeit for the privilege of owning such a device you should absolutely expect a certain level of customer service/ consumer confidence. I've seen this exact issue pop up again and again on these forums. Will Microsoft continue to shrug this off and pretend like there is nothing wrong or will they acknowledge that there is obviously some kind of design flaw inherent in the surface pro 6 power supply and take responsibility?

2021-01-04T07:02:04+00:00 Nope... this is perhaps actual surface feature on September 15 2020 release
Surface Pro 6 update history (microsoft.com)
Surface – Firmware – 241.304.139.0 Surface System Aggregator -Firmware 241.304.139.0

*Improves battery Smart Charging reliability.

Caring for your Surface battery (microsoft.com)
It feature smart charging
Battery Smart Charging – Battery Smart Charging is a feature that helps protect your battery from the effects of charging patterns and high temperatures that may accelerate battery deterioration or lead to expansion. Battery Smart Charging is always active and engages automatically to limit battery charging capacity when it detects your device is plugged in for prolonged periods and/or used at elevated temperatures. Battery smart charging is automatically deactivated when the battery is discharged below 20%.
Even when you enable battery limit, sometimes it still drain the battery by itself.

2021-01-02T13:01:38+00:00 I am having the same problem. This is happening for last few days. It is intermittent.
The behavior is strange that it works fine and suddenly the light on the connecting pin goes off. I guess, It happens when there is a movement with the Surface.
Then, when I put surface in sleep mode and come back after a while, unplug the cable and plug it again, it starts working.
Very irritating and disturbs the on going work.

2020-12-29T02:38:49+00:00 Hi, I just get the same issue for this 2 days
I plug in the adapter, led solid white ... OK, should be charging
but the battery indicator says that on battery
At first I thought it is automatic drain cycle because I'm using battery saver on UEFI, suddenly charge again after a while ... but it is not.
This problem - I suspect - is because the pin is not contacted properly
or the charging port on the surface is dirty
This is the flaw of the pin design, while it is fancy with magnetic etc, but it is not reliable than the usual DC port
For emergency fix, you plug the cord, TURN your MAGNETIC PIN (towards you or counter clockwise) and try to get the charging pin to contact the port on surface
I will try cleaning the charging port later and update on result

2020-11-04T22:59:11+00:00 Hello AGARGJ,
We really apologize for the convenience this has caused you.
First of all, is the tip light of your charger still coming on? If no, please follow these steps:
- Check the PSU (Power Supply Unit) and cables for any physical damages. Damaged PSU or cables may cause the PSU to not function as intended.
2. Try turning the power connector over and plugging into the device from a different orientation.
3. Try another Surface branded PSU or test the charger on another Surface. This will help isolate if this issue is with charger or the device.
If the issue persists, this could be a possible hardware which is replacement is the only option that Surface support provides.
Kindly contact Microsoft Surface Support to set up an exchange. If you're located outside United States, see Global Support.
Hope this helps.
Kind regards,
StevenK
