Surface Pro 7 charger randomly stops working

I bought my Surface Pro 7 about 5 months ago and the charger has been giving me problems for about a month now. It only sometimes charges and it seems to be random when it does. I have to plug and unplug the charger multiple times in multiple outlets around the house in order for the Surface to recognize it, and when it does I have to leave it be because if I move it in any way, it stops charging again.

Please if anyone has had this problem or has anyone knows what I could do, it would be appreciated. Not sure if the problem is the charger but it is very frustrating since the device is brand new and I haven't even used it for a year.

    Hi Patricia Candelario,

Thanks for reaching out to Microsoft Community and posting your inquiry.

To verify if it's a problem with the charger or the charging port, we suggest the following:

    • Try a different Surface Charger and check if the issue is resolve.

    • Clean the tip of the charger with a cloth, dirt might be blocking the connection.

    • Try the current charger to a different Surface Device.

We recommend following the steps at What to do if your Surface power supply or charger doesn’t work and requesting service if needed.

    Kind regards,

    John Neil_J

The portion of the charging cable that magnetically attaches to the surface is removable from the charging brick.

Disconnect the cable and plug it back into the charging brick. Then put the magnetic plug back on the surface and the light should come on and start charging again.

This is the only solution I found to temporarily recharge the surface until it dies again.

I am very disappointed that such a great product can be hindered by such a nuisance like charging cable failure. Hope this helps.

I'm having the same issue and I only bought my Surface Pro 7 about 3 weeks ago. I'm a student and immediately ordered a replacement because I need it to connect to virtual classes and take notes when class is person.

The light won't come on when plugged in (and the surface remains dead), it also seems like the magnetic pull when plugging the connector into the surface is not/barely happening compared to when it worked. I'm hoping this means the charger is broken and not the surface's port.

The weird part is the usb port on the charger still works and charges my iphone, so I am still worried something is wrong with my surface's charging port even though it's brand new. I had an original Surface and the charger worked for about 8 years even after getting chewed up by my dog.

Since I already ordered a replacement, the main goal of this post was to get reassurance that this has happened to other people and that the replacement charger solved the problem.

I wanted to update you all about the charging cord issue.

After not getting any satisfaction from Microsoft Support I went out on Amazon and order a car charging  cord and a house charging cord that are not Microsoft and the were very reasonable and work perfectly.

I got an email from the support person that could not help me with out charging me for something that is under warranty.

His name is Badr Eddine S.

I had asked that this be escalated and he wouldn’t do it.

I hope with all these posts the customers considering a Microsoft product, especially a Surface product they run the other way.
