Surface Pro 7 charger randomly stops working

I bought my Surface Pro 7 about 5 months ago and the charger has been giving me problems for about a month now. It only sometimes charges and it seems to be random when it does. I have to plug and unplug the charger multiple times in multiple outlets around the house in order for the Surface to recognize it, and when it does I have to leave it be because if I move it in any way, it stops charging again.

Please if anyone has had this problem or has anyone knows what I could do, it would be appreciated. Not sure if the problem is the charger but it is very frustrating since the device is brand new and I haven't even used it for a year.

    Hi Patricia Candelario,

Thanks for reaching out to Microsoft Community and posting your inquiry.

To verify if it's a problem with the charger or the charging port, we suggest the following:

    • Try a different Surface Charger and check if the issue is resolve.

    • Clean the tip of the charger with a cloth, dirt might be blocking the connection.

    • Try the current charger to a different Surface Device.

We recommend following the steps at What to do if your Surface power supply or charger doesn’t work and requesting service if needed.

    Kind regards,

    John Neil_J

I run a computer lab with 14 Surface Pro 7s and they ALL have this issue.  It's driving me nuts.

My surface pro does the same issue. It's absolutely terrible when all of a sudden it will not charge and you're using it for work-from-home. I can't believe a company like microsoft would allow this to happen. I have found no way to fix this and instead pray everytime I need to charge that the charger will work (i've ordered two new ones and they all have the issue). This is definitely a consumer product issue that the entire industry should know and microsoft should fix

I have this issue also. I purchased a replacement charger, but 6 months later the same problem came about. I kept the older charger so now I try them both over and over again until one of them work. Does anyone know how to fix this issue? The issue I believe is the brick because the USB on the brick also stops working.

I am experiencing similar issues with my SP7.

I always leave my surface pro 7 plugged in and on. I have a screensaver that turns on after 30 minutes and the battery settings are set to "Best Battery Life". Some nights I would leave it on overnight and find it still working with the screensaver showing and some nights I would wake up to find it dead, still plugged in but the white light on the charger is off. On very few occasions the surface stopped charging while I was using it and I only caught it before it died because I would receive a low battery notification on my screen.

I'm aware other users experienced this issue but I have found no solution online that resolves the issue. I have updated battery driver, I have disabled hibernation and sleep settings, and the only way to charge the surface again is to disconnect the battery adapter brick from the cable connected to the wall and reconnect it - only then will the surface charge again. I don't feel this is a hardware issue as this problem has been occuring since I purchased it last year and I'm not sure how this would be a software issue because everything is up to date.

To answer any follow-up questions: I have not tried another charger, I have not tried the charger on a different surface pro.

    Thanks for any help.
