This morning the screen froze and I did a reset as per Microsoft's instructions. Now it won't turn on - I see a black screen. When I press the power and the volume up buttons at the same time the keyboard lights up but the screen stays black.

Hello Dawn724, Thank you for contacting the Microsoft Support Community.

I'm sorry to hear that your Surface Pro 4 is not turning on properly. Here are some steps you can try to fix the issue (sorry if this is duplicate to what you've already tried).

    • Make sure your Surface is plugged in and press and hold the power button for 30 seconds, then release it. This will force a shutdown and restart your device.
    • If the screen is still black, press and hold the power and volume down buttons for 15 seconds, then release them. This will perform a two-button shutdown and reset your device. I know you tried this but give it another shot.
    • You can also try to wake the screen, use one of the following keyboard shortcuts: Windows logo keyPor Ctrl + Alt + Del. Or for a black screen, use the following keyboard shortcut: Windows logo key + CtrlShiftB.

If none of these steps work, please let us know and we'll see if there are other steps we can try.

    Thanks for the question!

My surface pro screen is black. I tried the power and volume up for 30 sec. The screen lights up VERY faintly, then it's black again.

    Hello

I tried all the above with no results .

The Microsoft logo flashes once then disappears and the screen goes black again.

Any suggestions would be appreciated .

If you have critical data, try connecting to an external monitor (HDMI/USB-C/etc) and retrieve the data. The display on external monitor should work in most cases.

What if I've tried all of those things but nothing works? It sounds like my PC is booting just fine just the screen is messed up somehow... What's the easiest way to gain access to my SSD so I can make you a copy of it or install it on another PC? I'm right at the end of getting my master's degree and absolutely every single piece of information is on that SSD. Is the only way to get my info off the hard drive is to get one of those SSD cables? Coming the community post, it sounds like this is a common problem? What did other people do that work for them?
