I just got my Surface Go for free for the college promise program (the program lets me attend community college for free). But the problem is that whenever I try to go on the internet or download an app it says I need I need a “new app to open this microsoft edge.” I have tried looking for updates because it had a red exclamation mark on the right corner but it just loads for so long and it gets me no where because the surface go just turns off. What can I do to fix this problem?? I start school soon.

    Hi Carol Puentes,

Thank you for reaching Microsoft Community. We're sorry for the trouble this has caused you.

I am aware of the problem you're encountering with your Surface Go, where every time you access the internet or download an app, a message stating that a "new app is required to open this Microsoft edge" appears. I am here to help. Allow me to ask some questions.

    • Does your Surface Go link to your school domain?
    • What version of Windows it is currently running?

When the default app for opening web links is incorrectly set, this problem may arise. To resolve this problem, take the following steps:

    1. Select Default Apps from Start > Settings > Apps.
    2. Choose your preferred web browser as your default option under Web browser, or, if it is already selected, change it to something else, then change it back.

Try updating Microsoft Edge or downloading it from the official website if the procedures above don't work. For more details, see Update to the new Microsoft Edge - Microsoft Support.

Let me know how it goes.

    Kind regards,

    Lavenia
