Use Surface Pro 7 as second monitor for desktop PC

Can I project to a Surface Pro 7 from a desktop PC so I can use the Surface Pro as a second (Extend) monitor?

Miracast won't work.

I think this is because the PC is connected to the internet via Ethernet cable.

The Surface is connected via wifi.

They are both using Windows 10 and 365.

I have a USB cable connecting the Surface Pro to the PC monitor - and can access my files that way, but still not project to the Surface Pro.

    Hi CindenLester,

Thank you for reaching Microsoft Community.

In projecting another PC to a Surface Pro 7, we could only use the **Project to this PC**feature on Windows 10. In using this feature, both device must be connected to a same Wi-Fi network and both device must be Miracast enabled. If those requirements are met, you may follow these steps below:

1: Set up Surface Pro 7

On the Surface Go 7, go to Windows Settings > System > Projecting to this PC

For Some Windows and Android devices can project to this PC when you say it's OK, set it to Available everywhere

For Ask to project to this PC, you may set it to Every time a connection is required

For the Require PIN for pairing, you may just set it to Never

Turn off the This PC can be discovered for projection only when it's plugged in if you plan on doing this while running on battery

Take note of the PC nameof your Surface Pro 7

    2: Project the screen

On your Desktop PC, press Windows key + P

Select Connect to a wireless display

Wait until the PC name of your Surface Pro 7 appears

Select it when it does then click Connect

    3: Allow connection

After doing step 2, a Connect permission prompt should appear on the lower left corner of your Surface Pro 7

                     Click Ok

Now your Desktop PC screen will be projected to the Surface Pro 7 display

You may change projection between Duplicate or Extend by pressing Windows key + P

    Hope this helps.

    Thank you Marrion_Y

Unfortunately my PC does not give the option to 'Connect to a wireless display'.

In DxDiag the PC says 'Miracast: Available, with HDCP' ... but when I press Windows key + K it says 'Your PC or mobile device doesn't support miracast so it can't project wirelessly'.

The drivers are all up to date on both machines, and the connection is VDSL2 fast broadband.

I thought maybe the PC can't project because it is connected via Ethernet (not WiFi).

That's why I was hoping it might be possible to project to the Surface Pro using a cable instead.

    But perhaps not?
