Surface Pro 8 BSOD After upgrading SSD

Hey everyone,

I recently got an i7 Surface Pro 8 with 256gb of storage, and got a 1tb WD CH SN530 SSD, and after transferring my files and Windows to an external driving, then transferring to the new SSD, I am getting crashes constantly. I have not been able to see what the crash reason is on the BSOD due to it booting back up too quickly, but it never happened until I got this new SSD.

I have tried doing a factory reset, and reinstalling Windows, to no success.

I also thought maybe it was overheating, and got a small heatsink for it, and applied thermal paste, but still to no success.

Any help would be greatly appreciated as I purchased the 256gb version with the full intent to replace the SSD and get more storage.

Thanks everyone!

Since no further info or solution was offered, i've left the original 256Gb drive inside and shelved the 1Tb drive. The "replaceable drive" feature is purely marketing and I fell for it.

The only official guidance is at SSD removal in compatible Surface devices - Surface | Microsoft Docs

That said, Microsoft's intention was to replace "like for like" using authorized commercial spares. This article Introducing SSD Commercial Spares for Surface Pro 7+ - Microsoft Tech Community is for the SP7+ but applies to the SP8 as well.

    There is also Need a M.2 2230 SSD? – Upgrade Surface Laptop 3/4/Go, ProX/Pro7+/Pro8, Steam Deck, etc. to 1TB SSD for ~$130-$220 – Dan S. Charlton (wordpress.com)

That said, did you reimage the new drive using a downloadable recovery image or did you use a different process?

(There really is no official support for replacing with a larger SSD, but..)

I upgraded my 128GB drive to 512GB using the Toshiba/Kioxia drive I purchased on Amazon. You can also get it on eBay (1 TB). There may be compatibiity issues with other brand drives. I used the MS Win Pro 8 recovey image to setup the new drive. I was unsuccessful imaging the old drive to the new drive using various cloning software. Works well and no issues.

We've been able to repeat the same issue here on Surface Pro 8. Upgraded using the WD CH SN530 m.2 2230 1TB and getting both throttling and/or BSOD exhibited with this drive. Makes no sense that SP8 is that uber-sensitive to this drive. We've got four of these drives and have had the same experience with 2 out of 4 which seems to indicate that it is a compatibility issue and not the drives specifically.

Hopefully, some future updates to SP8 will widen the support for WD SSD replacement drives in this unit.

Same problem here - no idea if it's a bad drive or something different. I received mostly the following BSODs:

    • 340 (UNEXPECTED_STORE_EXCEPTION)
    • 59 (SYSTEM_SERVICE_EXCEPTION)
    • 122 (KERNEL_DATA_INPAGE_ERROR)

Hopefully this will help someone investigate the problem while I try to troubleshoot this myself.
