Surface pro 4 screen keeps shaking

Hello,

I have a surface pro 4, which I have been using for 2 years.  The screen has been having some issues lately and the computer has been overheating.

I have been using an official surface pro 3 charger for a few months. The charger seemed to cause the surface to overheat.

This led to my buying a new charger online. For a while it seemed to solve the problem of overheating.

Lately with this charger my surface's screen shakes/vibrates making it hard to see the screen clearly and almost impossible to work with.

I'd like to know if this problem is related to my surface or could it be the charger.

If it's the charger, how can I ensure that I'm buying an authentic one, online? As the Microsoft store indicates it's sold out surface chargers.

Should appreciate your help.

You most likely have the infamous bad battery issue, which like mine, starts to overheat causing bad flickering when charging because the charger is attached continously, then budges enough to separate the case from the screen, which is then a potential fire hazard. On some lithium batteries eg Sony laptops a few years back they actually spontaneously explode and catches on fire (which was why they were banned from air cargo flights, and I believe at least one plane crash is attributed to such an issue.) Im not the only one, there were enough for a class action suit (that was later dropped) - just goggle "bad surface battery bulge". Microsoft response to me when I called it in was to deny this exists, and suggested a reformat and reinstall of the operating system when this is obviously a hardware issue. Later, after I showed it to a store manager, was told since it was just after a month past my warranty, they can only offer me a refurbished Surface 5, for $600. Currently I can use it unplugged without flickering, but when I have to charge it and it charges for more than 2 hours, it gets really hot and the screen flickers, and at that point I just shut it all down.

My surface 3 pro also had a bad battery after 3 years, couldnt hold a charge, which is why I brought a Surface 4. Ridiculous - I gave up. I got a Mac pro - it works better in every way, and Apple doesnt do this kind of stupid blame avoidance.

    Hello, slayer123_301!

Thanks for reaching out to Microsoft Community and posting your concerns. We're sorry to learn you have screen display issues on your Surface Pro 4 and noting that it shakes/vibrates making it hard for you to view the screen. This is not the experience that we want you to have. We appreciate you taking the time to let us know about this and allowing us to help you out.

As for the charger replacement, you can request one through this page: https://support.microsoft.com/devices/

In the meantime, please perform the following troubleshooting steps in the same exact order to determine if this is a hardware issue regarding your screen:

    • I believe you've restarted your device already, kindly force shutdown the device and restart.
    1. Press and hold the power button until the screen turns off (about 10 seconds), then release the power button.
    2. Press and release the power button to turn your Surface back on. You should see the Surface logo.

If that doesn't work, use this two-button shutdown process to make sure your Surface turns off completely:

    1. Press and hold the power button on your Surface until the screen turns off (about 30 seconds), then release it.
    2. Press and hold the volume-up button and the power button at the same time until the screen turns off (about 15 seconds), then release both.

The screen may flash the Surface logo, but continue holding the buttons down for at least 15 seconds. 3. After you release the buttons, wait 10 seconds. 4. Press and release the power button to turn your Surface back on. You should see the Surface logo.

    • Check if this happens in the Surface UEFI page to determine if this is a hardware issue.
    1. Select Start **>**Settings  >Update& security >Recovery.
    2. Under Advanced****startup, select Restart****Now.
    3. Under Choose an****option, select Troubleshoot > Advanced****Options > UEFIFirmwareSettings, and then select Restart. If it happens in there, the device needs to be sent in for replacement. Please Contact Microsoft Support for replacement options. If you are outside the US, please check this page to know the number for your country in our list of Global Customer Service phone numbers. Kindly prepare a video capturing the issue on the screen as you may be asked to provide it.

If it does not happen in the Surface UEFI, we recommend that you perform a Reset. Check these 3 forms of Reset below:

    Fresh Start:

Fresh Start is the least intrusive form of reset.

You will not lose any files or personal information.

You will need to reinstall desktop programs.

Fresh Start also ensures you have has all available updates once complete.

If there is an issue with Windows itself, the issue may still occur after a Fresh Start.

    Reset from Within Windows:

This option uses the devices Hard Drive Partition to reimage the device.

This option can delete personal data (You can choose Keep my files or Remove everything).

You will need to reinstall desktop apps.

You will need to run updates upon completion.

If there is an issue with the partition, the issue may still occur after the reset.

    USB Recovery:

This option reimages the entire device, including the partition on the hard drive.

It is the most complete form of reset.

You will need to back up your personal data.

You will need to reinstall desktop apps. You will need to run updates after completion.

If the issue occurs after a reset, then the root cause is very likely hardware related.

You will need to download and set up a recovery image on a USB drive. Open USB recovery link to get started. The information on what size and type of drive is provided at the destination page.

We hope this helps you out.

    Kind regards,

    Janette_Z
