Surface Keyboard & Bluetooth Dongle

I recently purchased a surface keyboard for my home PC, however as I don't have built in bluetooth I believed that I could just buy a USB bluetooth dongle and then easily connect.

However I'm having issues doing this via any of the available USB bluetooth dongles I can find... is the Surface Keyboard only compatible with built in bluetooth?

Thanks

Shawn does not work for Microsoft and actually does not have a lot of experience with Surface devices other than his own SP2017. I doubt he has had hands on experience with Bluetooth dongles.

There are a couple of Microsoft/Surface keyboards that support Bluetooth - which one do you have? Buy Surface Bluetooth Wireless Keyboard  - Microsoft Store is compatible with Bluetooth 4.x/5 - some of the dongles out there are only 3.0. Amazon has some 5.0 USB adapters Amazon.com : usb bluetooth adapter 5.0

As for Shawn's statement about requiring the latest version of Windows 10 21H1, he is wrong. There is a new "swift pairing" function in Windows 10 that was introduced recently, and THAT does not mean regular pairing should not work (some of these keyboards work with Macs, etc.).

There are a few things that could interfere with Bluetooth pairing - but I'm not sure if that is where you are having issues. Have you tried any of the 5.0 USB Bluetooth adapters?

Thanks for the reply Barb, this is the one I purchased, the Microsoft WS2-00003 Surface Bluetooth Keyboard - Grey

I'm going to buy another bluetooth USB dongle just in case there were compatibility issues with the previous one. I'm hoping the following works:

    Thanks for your help

This has nothing to do with Windows 10 21H1 as it's a hardware issue.

My motherboard doesn't have built in bluetooth so I'm trying to find a solution that uses a third party USB bluetooth dongle. I have no idea why this is so difficult or why the process of setting up (or using your convoluted support website) is so difficult. The website you suggested doesn't even have chat active at the moment.

Please just confirm whether the only way to use this keyboard is to have native bluetooth support on your device (no USB dongles supported). If so I will gladly return

    Thanks

    Hi Taddo12,

I believe it only works with Bluetooth if your device supports it, are you on the latest Windows 10 21H1 as that is one of the requirements.

You can try contacting Surface Support via support.microsoft.com/contactus, press get help.

Type in Surface Keyboard, press the blue button contact support. If you see articles link, scroll down to press contact support.

    Choose Surface, then choose other.

Chat in browser, make sure you are signed in with personal Microsoft Account.

    Hope that helps,

    Shawn
