Surface Pen Won't Write + Missing Drivers

My surface pen for my Surface Pro 7+ stopped writing. I have had this problem before, and used to be able to fix it by uninstalling and reinstalling, or updating certain drivers. That didn't work this time, and I have tried everything. My pen battery is 60% and still connects to the Surface. The eraser also works. While trying to resolve the issue, I noticed that I was missing my HID compliant touch screen driver and my HID compliant pen driver, even when using "show hidden drivers". Is there anything I can do to resolve this?

    Hi Kara W,

You’re welcome! I’m glad that I could help you with the driver issue. I’m sorry to hear that the pen is still not working in any Microsoft painting software. Testing the pen on your friend’s surface is a good idea to see if the issue is with the pen or the device.

If the pen still doesn’t work on your friend’s device, then it’s likely that the pen is faulty and needs to be replaced. If the pen works on your friend’s device, then the issue is with your device. You can reset the Surface device to clear out that this is a software related concern. Or you may need to contact live Microsoft Support for further assistance they can further check your device remotely.

I’m glad that you found my response helpful. If you have any other questions or concerns, feel free to ask. Have a great day!

    Kind regards,

    Christopher.

    Hi Christopher,

Thank you so much for your response! I am still having this issue, but I have resolved the driver issue. The pen does not work in any Microsoft painting software like OneNote or Fresh Paint, and I've already tried removing + replacing the tip. I plan to test the pen on my friend's surface this weekend.

I appreciate you being transparent about replacing the pen, and the information you gave me about the drivers. I'll contact Microsoft Support as soon as I can.

Thank you so much for your time and response,

    Kara

    Hi Kara W,

We appreciate your post on Microsoft Community. Based on the description you posted, you have an issue with Surface Pen wherein the pen is connected to the device but no ink at all. This may be caused by the Pen driver, update or the Pen itself.

Let’s work together in finding the best solution to this issue.

    1. Since the battery is 60% on the pen.
    2. Try to connect the pen to another Surface device if it will work?
    3. Try to reseat the pen tip by remove the tip and insert it again.
    4. **Test your pen by inking, writing, or erasing in OneNote, Sticky Notes, or Fresh Paint.**If your pen works in one of these apps, then the app you want to use may not work with your pen.
    5. **Open apps and use your Surface with touch.**If you can't use your finger on your Surface, go to What to try if your Surface touchscreen doesn't work. After touch is working, try your pen again.

Regarding the driver is missing in the device manager.

    1. Please download and install the driver pack on your Surface device. Download drivers and firmware for Surface - Microsoft Support
    2. After the installation is complete, please restart the Surface to apply changes.
    3. Then, also download and run theSurface diagnostic toolkit on your Surface. This will help us fix any hidden issue on your Surface device.
    4. Restart again Surface to apply changes.

If the issue persists and the pen work on another Surface device. Possible this is an issue on the device driver that need to reset back to default to clear out that this is not a software related concern.

If the pen already tests to another Surface device and still not working, this is already an issue on the pen that needs to be replaced. Just to set you an expectation.
