I figured it out!
So you have to click the windows button and click the "all apps" button on the top right of that menu and you should be able to freely drag all the apps over to the desktop screen.

I figured it out!

The problem is not resolved by this instruction. We need the app to appear on the DESKTOP, not in the taskbar so how do we get it to appear on the desktop?
Your solution doesn't fit in with what I want to do which is to add the icon to the desktop. It disappears when I close the application.
