Is the Surface Connect to USB-C Adapter permanently discontinued?

I have been trying to source this product for my workplace and we desperately need 50 or more of them to integrate the remainder of our fleet into a hot-desking environment with exclusively USB-C docking stations. We intially bought 160 units of this very expensive adapter and now it seems to be at EOL. If this is the case that is seriously premature for a product that supports SPs all the way up to only the latest model...

Please explain and if I am mistaken can you let me know when this will become available again?

Thanks.

Thanks Barb, appreciate all the info. =)

I guess we will have to go out and buy 67 of the USB-C Surface Pros and bin the ones we have which we don't have adapters for. How convenient!

Then it will be a ball telling staff who lose their adapter that we have to replace the entire computer.

Really poor decision from Microsoft I think we will be looking to get out of this ecosystem ASAP.

I emailed a contact on the Surface team and received this response:

"Microsoft has ended production of the Surface Connect to USB-C adapters (As listed here:https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/p/surface-connect-to-usb-c-adapter/92s8zhcs7vfj?rtc=1&activetab=pivot:overviewtab).

We apologize for any inconvenience this may bring you."

Microsoft is releasing two other devices, a Surface dock 2 and a USB-C travel hub. Here's one of the press articles:

    https://www.zdnet.com/article/microsoft-takes-the-wraps-off-its-new-new-spring-surface-devices-accessories/

EDIT: Here is the official announcement of the new products - https://blogs.windows.com/devices/?p=262857?ocid=Event_soc_omc_sur_tw_Text_lrn_SurfaceLaunch

I totally understand that you have your own docking solution and why you might want the Surface to USB-C adapter. Amazon has some Surface Connect to USB-C "charging" cables listed from third parties, but I have no idea if the might work for your environment or if these handle both power and data.

    Janette,

Why would you not acknowledge the info I provided and why send the customer through hoop jumping?

I emailed a contact on the Surface team and received this response:

    Hi Janette,

Can you please confirm whether it is discontinued permanently? My local suppliers are suggesting that the product is EOL and will never be available again which is baffling considering Microsoft has only just recently released USB-C enabled devices.

    Thanks,

    Ray
