Surface book 2 keyboard not working

I've had a Surface Book 2 for about three years now and since last week the keyboard unit doesn't seem to communicate with the screen unit. The only buttons that work are the detach, function and back-light. The laptop repeatedly makes the sounds as if I was detaching and reattaching multiple times for about 10 time on start up, then stops. I've restarted the laptop keeping my files both with the OS from the laptop and then downloading a new OS from the cloud to no avail. Reinstalled all the drivers but nothing has changed. I'm starting to think this is a hardware problem... is there some way to figure out if its the keyboard or motherboard or perhaps the connectors?

The keyboard on my surface book 2 stopped working almost 2 years now. The warranty expired 8/20. I have tried every troubleshooting techniques and even brought it to a Best Buy and Micro Center and they referred me to Microsoft. I have downloaded the self diagnostic software a few times but that also didn't resolve the issue. The functions key lights up but the Cap locks doesn't. The numbers key works only when prompted to enter my pin then doesn't work when the computer loads. I can only use the computer if I load the on-screen keyboard. I'm ready to throw it away but I just can't afford to because I was layed off.

    Hi Alexander

This exact problem started for me as well just 3-4 days ago 02/01/2024

Detach buttons , function key and back light work but nothing else. Cant even use usb port to use bluetooth keyboard or mouse, Happened out of the blue. No damage or anything. I have called microsoft and after 3 hours they couldnt fix. I went to best buy and they couldnt figure out either. Basically microsoft told me that if it was replaceable they would have but they dont make surface book 1 anymore, so BASICALLY long story short - have to buy a new laptop.

I have a feeling this is purposely done, something to do with recent updates 😡

I have the exact same problem and it just started today 2/5/2024. CTRL, back light, and detach buttons work but not the mouse or any other button. I'm discouraged that Microsoft has not been able to help after 3 hours on the phone. Please let me know if you get this figured out!!

    Hi Kimberly Patterson,

Thank you for reaching Microsoft Community. We're sorry to know that your Surface book's keyboard stopped working. Let us both isolate the issue.

    Confirm connectivity.

Press the Caps and Fn keys on your Surface Keyboard several times to check whether the LED lights turn on.

If the LED lights don't turn on, there might be a hardware issue. To verify in UEFI, do the following:

    1. Turn off your Surface and wait 10 seconds.
    2. Press and hold the Volume Up button—and at the same time, press and release the Power button.
    3. You'll see the logo screen on your screen. Continue to hold the Volume Up button. Release the button when the UEFI screen appears.
    4. Press the up and down arrow keys to change what is selected on the left side menu to check if the keys work or not.
    • If the keys are working correctly in UEFI, but not in Windows: The problem is likely with the software installed on the Surface, and you'll need to reinstall. See Creating and using a USB recovery drive for Surface.
    • If the keys are still not working correctly: If the Keyboard still doesn’t work on your Surface, then it is more likely a hardware problem on the keyboard. You can submit a service order for your Surface Book.

The troubleshooting can be found at Troubleshoot Surface Type Cover or Keyboard - Microsoft Support.

    Kind regards,

    Lavenia

It’s strange that I started having same problem with my laptop. The keyboard or cursor not working. The touch screen works, the function key and the brightness keys on keyboard work however keyboard doesnt type and cursor also dont work. Its strange few people have exactly same problem in same time frame and on same surface book 2.
