HP Universal Printer Driver

I purchased a new Surface Pro X computer. Have been trying to upload my printer HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M277dw. Found out that the Surface ARM 32bit will not upload the normal driver. Tried the HP Universal Printer Driver and received the message  "Operation could not be completed (error 0x800f0214). The specified path does not contain any applicable device INFs." What is needed to be done here? Has been very frustrating trying to get something printed.

This does not really help me out. If I would have known that the surface pro x came with ARM processor with 32bits and that it would be such an hassle to get connected with my printer as well as other 3rd party software, I would have never purchased the pro x.

Now I have to save files to a thumb drive and then us that to print. Very frustrating.

What affordable printers out there, that is similar to the HP color LaserJet pro MFP MF 277, should I look at as options. This is ridiculous.

    Hello, Wub68!

We're sorry if the response above is not what you expected of the device. We understand your concerns on this. The Surface Pro X Tech Specs indicated the type of processor it has and scrolling down to the end of the page will mention the following:

[5] Surface Pro X for consumers comes with Windows 10 Home to bring you the powerful Windows features you use most at an exceptional value. If you need additional enterprise management and security tools for the workplace, you can switch to Windows 10 Pro for just $99 or purchase Surface Pro X for Business. At this time, Surface Pro X will not install 64-bit applications that have not been ported to ARM64, some games and CAD software, and some third-party drivers or anti-virus software. New 64-bit apps are coming to ARM 64 all the time. Find out more in the FAQ.

This may not be the answer you're looking for, we hope to have given you the information regarding compatibility issues.  You take care and stay safe!

    Sincerely,

    Janete_Z

I have had the same frustrating problems with HP Printers and my Pro X. In the end I have started to use the HP Eprint service which is pretty neat and where you just email the document to the printer. Works well but not with every file format but all the normal ones like doc, pdf, jpeg etc. /J

    Hi, Wub68!

Thanks for reaching out to Microsoft Community and posting your concerns. We're sorry to learn you encounter issues setting up your HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M277dw printer on to your Surface Pro X due to driver compatibility issues. You're right that is has something to do with the ARM Processor. The universal printer driver you selected is 64-bit. Please check the Surface Pro X app compatibility page to be guided accordingly.

    • 64-bit (x64) apps won’t work. You'll need 64-bit (ARM64) apps, ***32-bit (ARM32)***apps, or ***32-bit (x86)***apps. You can usually find 32-bit (x86) versions of apps, but some app developers only offer 64-bit (x64) apps.

The organization that develops the app determines whether their app will work on a Windows 10 ARM-based PC. Kindly check with HP Support if they have a version that is compatible with devices using an ARM chip or if they have plans to develop one in the future as it is up to the printer manufacturers to make compatible drivers for Windows 10 ARM-based devices.

There's a workaround for existing HP printers though, the HP Smart app available at the Microsoft Store app may help you out. Kindly check with HP on printers that works well through the HP Smart app. Someone mentioned through this thread link about the HP Smart app.

There are some links that will lead you to non-Microsoft websites. Please watch out for ads on the sites that may advertise products frequently classified as a PUP (Potentially Unwanted Products). Thoroughly research any product advertised on the site before you purchase it.

I happen to have seen this page from the HP Support website. Kindly check this out as it helps understand about HP Printers - Install and Use the HP Smart App (Windows 10). You may also visit this page to learn about Mobile Printing Solutions with HP Printers.

We hope this helps you out.

    Kind regards,

    Janette_Z
