I have a ROG Strix G814JI_G814JI with specs below running Windows 11, fully up to date as of 7/6/25:

Realtek PCIe GbE Family Controller

I have been having the issue that my internet has been slow. When I run tests on Ookla on wifi I get about 400Mbps, when I plug in my Cat8 Ethernet I get speeds of 90Mbps. My wife on Ethernet with the same cable is getting 900+Mbps. I have the Realtek PCIe GbE Family Controller for my Ethernet. I can 'trick' it into giving me better speed for long enough to do a speedtest, but when I go back to try again it reverts back to the 90Mbps.

Steps I have taken:

-I have uninstalled the drivers and reinstalled them with virgin drivers from Realtek.

-I have done TCP/IP flushes and renews

-Reset both the computer and the router/modem

-Changed Ethernet cables to rule out any issues with them and cross tested them with my wife's computer

-Changed the ports from the router to rule out an port that is not rated for 1Gig

Now, hat in hand I come here to ask the big brains and see if yall can point me in the right direction.

Hello,

Please download and install the latest network driver from your computer manufacturer's website.

Next, open Device Manager, go to Network Adapters, and check the Properties of the wired LAN adapter to access the Advanced settings.

There, review the Speed and Duplex configuration.

If a newer version of the BIOS is available, consider updating it—only if necessary.

Important:

Before updating the BIOS, if your drive is encrypted, make sure to disable encryption temporarily.

Also, go to Windows Settings > Accounts > Sign-in options, and turn off

"To improve security, only allow Windows Hello sign-in for Microsoft accounts on this device (recommended)"

to ensure other sign-in methods are visible on the login screen.

The Network Adapter was already manually set to 1Gbs in the Speed and Duplex configuration. I also downloaded the newest drivers for the Network Controller but revered, per your suggestion, to the older version from the computer manufacturer's website. Still didn't work. I also updated BIOS to the latest version from the manufacturer's website. Still no joy.

Ethernet speed stuck at 90 - 100 Mbps is usually caused by a hardware problem:

Faulty, loose or poor quality network cable.
Faulty Ethernet cable connector.
Faulty Ethernet LAN wall socket.
Faulty Ethernet LAN socket on PC or router/switch.

The first test to do is to unplug/replug the network cable at both ends or try replacing the cable with a higher quality or different brand.

Is the PC's network cable plugged into the Ethernet wall socket or is it plugged directly into the router's LAN port?
Are your PC and router in the same room or in different rooms or on different floors of the house? If you have another computer with Gigabit Ethernet connectivity, unplug the network cable from your PC and plug it into the other computer and check if the speed is regular.

..I had already ruled out the port or the cable as I have three Cat8 cables that I have tested with my wife's computer. All three give 900+Mbps on her computer. I also changed ports and tested both on my computer and hers to verify that it wasn't a port on the router/modem. This did not work.

-The PC's network cable is plugged directly into the PC and to the router/modem. There are no other connections between the PC and the source.

-The PC and router are on the same floor within 10 feet of each other.

Verify that the date and time on your PC are correct.

If you are using a third-party Firewall/Antivirus, try to completely uninstall it using its proprietary removal software. Also, disable or uninstall any VPN software, then try again. If the problem persists, try to perform a clean boot of Windows: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/topic/how-to-perform-a-clean-boot-in-windows-da2f9573-6eec-00ad-2f8a-a97a1807f3ddDuring Clean Boot Mode check the speed.

If during Clean Boot Mode the problem does not occur, it means that some service or program is creating the interference or conflict. Follow the instructions in the guide to find the service or program that is causing the conflict and remove it.
