Bing Search Results: Differences Between Microsoft Edge and Google Chrome

Hello Microsoft Community,

I've recently encountered a peculiar issue regarding the search results on Bing when using Microsoft Edge compared to Google Chrome. The issue pertains to a new website

When I use the specific site keyword "site:domain" in my search query, the results displayed vary significantly between the two browsers. On Chrome, the results are directly related to my query, displaying relevant pages from the aforementioned website. However, on Edge, the results often include pages that don't seem to be related to my domain at all. The search seems to produce more extraneous or 'off-topic' results.

In attempts to troubleshoot, I've cleared my browser cache, ensured I'm using the most recent versions of each browser, and used private/incognito modes to mitigate personalized search history influences. Despite these measures, the discrepancy persists.

Is there an explanation for why this difference exists? Is Bing's search algorithm operating differently on Microsoft Edge compared to Google Chrome? Could there be browser-specific settings affecting this? More importantly, is there a way to improve the relevance of my search results on Edge, especially when using site-specific keywords for newer websites ? Any assistance or insights would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance for your help.

Best regards,

Marcin

    Hello Amr,

Thank you for your detailed response. I understand the potential reasons you've outlined that could lead to differences in Bing search results between Microsoft Edge and Google Chrome. However, my main concern is not about the differences between browsers but rather, the irrelevance of the results Bing is providing specifically on Microsoft Edge when using the site:{domian} operator.

The results I am getting are not just different, they're unrelated to my domain, almost as if some error is causing Bing to misinterpret the site query for my domain. This is especially puzzling since the issue is only occurring on Microsoft Edge and not on other browsers, and is consistent despite clearing the cache and cookies.

Could there be an issue with how Bing interacts with Microsoft Edge or how Edge interprets search queries? Also, are there any other troubleshooting steps I could try to resolve this issue or verify the cause? I'm interested in getting to the bottom of this, and I'm open to any additional insights or suggestions you may have.

Thank you in advance for your continued assistance.

    Best regards,

    Marcin

Browser-specific settings could also potentially affect search results. For example, if you're signed into a Microsoft account on Edge, Bing might personalize your search results based on your previous search history and other data associated with your Microsoft account.

I understand your point about browser-specific settings, such as being signed into a Microsoft account on Edge, potentially personalizing search results based on previous search history and other data.

However, I'd like to clarify that my searches were conducted under controlled conditions. Specifically, I performed these tests on a clean user profile (not logged into any account) with cleared browsing history, cache, and cookies on both browsers to ensure no personalization or past search data would affect the search results.

    I apologize for the misunderstanding.

If you are using Bing as the search engine in both Microsoft Edge and Google Chrome and under the controlled conditions you mentioned, it is less likely that personalization would cause significant differences in search results between the two browsers. However, there could still be some factors that contribute to the differences you observed:

    1. Browser updates: If one browser is running a newer version than the other, it might have updated algorithms or features that could affect search results.
    2. Browser-specific features: Each browser may have unique features or settings that could impact search results, even when using the same search engine.
    3. Location data: Browsers may handle location data differently, which could lead to variations in search results based on geographic relevance.
    4. A/B testing: Search engines like Bing may conduct A/B testing to experiment with different search algorithms or features. This could result in different search results being displayed to users, even when using the same search engine on different browsers.

A/B testing, also known as split testing, is a marketing experiment wherein you split your audience to test variations on a campaign and determine which performs better.

    1. Timing: Search results can change over time as new content is indexed or search algorithms are updated. If you conducted your tests at different times, this could account for some of the differences in search results.

I hope the answer makes sense to you

    Hello Amr,

Thank you for your swift response and the detailed explanation about the differences in search algorithms between Bing and Google. However, I believe there may have been a misunderstanding in my initial query.

I've been using Bing as the search engine in both browsers (Microsoft Edge and Google Chrome) for my tests. Despite this, I've been observing the differing search results on these browsers for same search engine (BING)

    Hi Marcin,

    I'm Amr, an independent advisor.

One moment while I search the internet...

The difference in search results between Bing on Microsoft Edge and Google on Chrome can be attributed to the different algorithms and ranking factors used by these search engines.

Each search engine has its own unique way of crawling, indexing and ranking web pages.

Bing's algorithm, for instance, places a higher emphasis on social media integration and overall user engagement on a website. It also tends to favour websites that are older and have a .gov or .edu domain. On the other hand, Google's algorithm places a higher emphasis on backlinks and the overall relevance of a website's content to the search query.

Browser-specific settings could also potentially affect search results. For example, if you're signed into a Microsoft account on Edge, Bing might personalize your search results based on your previous search history and other data associated with your Microsoft account.

To improve the relevance of your search results on Edge, especially when using site-specific keywords for newer websites, you can try the following:

    1. Use Bing's Advanced Search Options

Bing offers advanced search options that allow you to refine your search queries. You can use these options to search within a specific website, limit your search to a specific region or language, or search for a specific file type.

    1. Optimize Your Website for Bing

If you're a website owner, you can optimize your website for Bing by focusing on factors that Bing's algorithm prioritizes.

This includes integrating your website with social media, improving user engagement, and ensuring that your website is fully indexable by Bing's web crawlers.

    1. Use Bing Webmaster Tools

Bing Webmaster Tools can provide you with insights into how Bing views your website.

You can use these tools to submit your website to Bing, see which keywords are driving traffic to your website, and identify any issues that might be preventing your website from ranking well on Bing.

    1. Personalize Your Search Settings

Bing allows you to personalize your search settings to improve the relevance of your search results.

You can adjust these settings to filter out adult content, turn on or off search suggestions, and choose whether or not to use Microsoft's personalized advertising and search services.

Note that SEO is a long-term process and it may take some time to see improvements in your search rankings. It's also important to note that while these strategies can improve your search rankings on Bing, they may not have the same effect on other search engines like Google.
