Problem with games and DirectX in Windows 10 Technical Preview

Anonymous
2014-10-06T23:58:31+00:00

After installing Windows 10 Technical Preview (a clean install) pretty much 99% of my games stopped working. Most of these I got on Steam, so when I try to play one, it starts the first-time setup, where it tries to install DirectX and then it just returns to desktop. If I try again, it just does the same, but if it's one of the few games which don't install it when running them the first time (i.e., Binding of Isaac), then it has no problems.

After that, I tried to play a couple of relatively new games I got from GoG, but they gave me error messages when trying to install DirectX. They still install, but if I try to play them they don't run because they can't find DirectX-related dlls in the computer.

According to Dxdiag, though, DirectX 11 is installed. Reading forums, it seems to me that most people can play games with no problem with the Tech Preview, but some can't because Windows 10 doesn't recognize their graphic cards, and they have to switch to integrated graphics. I can't do this, as my motherboard doesn't have them, but at least when checking system information it seems that the OS recognizes the card (a Radeon Hd 4870, not exactly cutting edge stuff...), so not sure if it's the same, though it might be, as I tried installing the latest drivers for Windows 7/8 and couldn't. Has anybody had similar problems? And did anyone manage to solve them, and how?

you have to update your Direct X with this: http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=8109 it will download and install/update all the necessary Direct X libraries required by most of the games.

I am facing the same problem, League of Legends does get into the Lobby but when i run the game, I am getting "An unknown DirectX error has occurred and League of Legends cannot start. Please make sure your video card is using the latest video drivers from the manufacturer".

South Park the stick of truth does not start at all, it shows in a task manager for second or so and then it crashes without any message.

World of Warcraft and HeathStone work fine.

Latest Intel and AMD drivers were installed yet it did not help. (intel from win update, the one from the site does not install as I get "wrong requirements message)

All of above mentioned games work good on Win 8.1 64-bit

System is just after the clean install + drivers

    Hi Rajesh,

I had tried to update the drivers directly from AMD. However, when I tried to install them, setup said that it wasn't able to do so. I tried now to update them from the Device Manager (where my card appears, so at least some form of driver is there, I guess), it connects to Windows Update but says that my drivers are up to date. I see that AMD uploaded some beta drivers this week, however these are only for newer cards and I can't use them (for older cards, they haven't updated them since last year).

When Steam tries to install DirectX, I don't get any error message, it just drops to desktop. However, when trying to run the DirectX executable, or try to install a game that runs it as part of their own install process, it gives an error message that says "An internal system error occurred. Please refer to DXError.log and DirectX.log in your Windows folder to determine problem.". These files aren't on the Windows folder, though, nor can I find them through the search function on the start menu.
