Hello, to anyone who is a Microsoft employee or i don't know, you work for them? Please kindly explain WHY i kept getting that annoying insider build green screen on a loop after i installed the latest windows 11 update? and obviously now that I'm writing this, means i m actually using my windows, that's because i uninstalled the latest update from the troubleshoot menu thing, please tell me this was some error or bug, because on one hand i don't want to lose my windows, on the other hand, windows keeps telling to update so that its not outdated, should i leave the insider program? is that necessary? i would love for anyone to explain...

Ok so... i did NONE of what you told me to do, let me explain...

first i went to my second pc and updated that one first to see if the same green screen thing will happen and it DIDNT, phew..

i used the windows assistant download link you sent and updated my second pc through that and it worked, then i was like... lemme just

try the same thing on my laptop! (the one that suffered the god awful green screen loop thing) for some reason i kept thinking what if i use the link instead of directly updating from the settings... and it WORKED. i did it! no more green screen loop (lets pray it wont come back to haunt me) but yes, and whatever you told me to do, i apologize, my nonexistent tech brain couldn't handle it, but i thank you for your help. IF however, i ever come across any issue again, i shall return... until then, farewell.

Hello Johnny ... I went through a very similar experience with the most recent update I tried to install (twice ... thought I borked the entire OS even though Windows screen told me "don't worry ... we'll undo the changes". Black screened, rebooted long and slow) which I think was 26120.3291 (Fri. 2/21/25). I'm currently on 24H2:

    Edition Windows 11 Pro

    Version 24H2

    Installed on ‎2/‎6/‎2025

    OS build 26120.3281

    Windows Feature Experience Pack 1000.26100.54.0

If I were to do the registry edit you mentioned what version if Windows would I then be on? I'm currently on the Beta Channel. And re the Registry, when I delete the WindowsSelfHost Key, I assume that would include all the "sub-keys" shown below the WindowsSelfHost Key?

Thanks in advance for any info you can provide.

    Regards ... Daniel C.

So it's not necessary for me to update windows right now?

because there's this... and i would love to update, i just don't want to risk being stuck again because this is my main laptop that i use for work

and OH! i forgot to mention, while my laptop was updating, the fans went crazy, they were loud and the laptop heated up while it ran the new update

which... only lasted a minute until the green loop thing, after uninstalling the update, it went back to normal. so yeah... it was quite a mini heart attack for me

so i guess ill wait until the next update, whenever that is?

i apologize, I'm not a big tech person, I'm just trying to wrap my head around all this...

    Hello Miss Dramatic,

I am assuming you must be on a 23H2 build. Do you know what channel and build you are currently on. Please press Start and type winver and report back your build #. What channel are you in on the Insider Page in Settings.

It appears you are being offered the 24H2 consumer build of Windows that was released last fall. Considering this is a work laptop, suggest you leave the Insider program. You can do this by deleting the entire WindowsSelfHost Key by using Registry Editor. It will be rebuilt after a reboot:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsSelfHost

Reboot your device. Now check your Insider Page in Settings to confirm that you are out of Insider. Suggest you go here to download the latest Windows:

    Regards,

No need to apologize—I totally get it! Since this is your main work laptop, it’s smart to hold off on updating for now to avoid another green screen loop. Windows updates are important for security and performance, but if the last one caused a serious issue, it’s safer to wait until Microsoft releases a more stable patch.

Your experience with the fans going crazy and the system overheating before crashing suggests that something in the update wasn’t playing nice with your hardware. Since things went back to normal after uninstalling it, that pretty much confirms the update itself was the problem. You can keep an eye on future updates and maybe wait until others confirm they’re stable before installing. If you want to delay updates entirely, you can go to Settings > Windows Update and pause updates for a few weeks. Let me know if you need help with that!
