Hi and thanks for reaching out. My name is William. I'm a Windows technical expert. I'll be happy to help you out today.

This implies the extension has created an entry in Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Edge or Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Edge. Normally, this path in the Windows registry is reserved for group policy settings for centrally managed computers, such as those that are art of a domain.

I would assume that since this is not a domain device, the extension you installed has secured itself in the browser to avoid manipulation by other extensions. If you dig into the paths I noted above, you can find the extension ID as a long string of alpha-numeric characters, which will correlate with the extension ID you see in the browser. Most often, for consumer products, these locked down extensions are installed by security applications.

When you click on the ellipsis in the top right-hand corner of the browser window to see Settings and more, you may see Managed by your organization at the foot of the menu that opens. Click on this entry to see an explanation:

If you use Microsoft Edge at school or work, it might be managed, or set up and maintained by your organization. Your organization can set up or restrict certain features, install and block extensions, monitor activity and control how you use it.

If Microsoft Edge is managed, you can view the policies that are set by your organization on the edge://policy**page.

The link at the end of this explanation will take you to the Policy page, where you can see what policies are in force. They are not necessarily enforced by an organization; some third-party security programs may do so in their attempts to protect the machine from malware.

If you can think of a better wording than Managed by your organization to describe this state, the Edge team would like to hear from you via the in-app feedback option (Alt-Shift-i).
