Microsoft edge won't download files and keeps saying every file has a virus. This started a day before the making of this post. I've also updated the Application. I've tried other browsers and I did not encounter this problem with chrome or Firefox. This problem seems to only occur on Microsoft Edge. I have also cleared my browsing and download data and modified the registry. Please help.

Good day! I'm Raniel, an Independent Advisor and a Microsoft user like you.

Can you also try to temporarily disable Microsoft Defender SmartScreen on MS Edge and see if it will download the file:

    1. Open MS Edge and go to Settings and more (...) > click on Settings
    2. Go to the "Privacy and services" tab and toggle the setting for Microsoft Defender SmartScreen to Off
    3. Once done, try to download the file again.
    4. If that didn't work, try to temporarily disable your antivirus, or do the option two on this article: https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/5520-turn-o...

    I hope this helps.

Raniel.....Your advice to reset the settings in Microsoft Edge fixed my issue. I was about ready to return my new HP computer because the popups kept hitting every 5 minutes whether Edge was open or not.

I did not have the issue when I first installed the computer and did not plan to use Edge as I like Chrome better. However the McAfee security did NOT have Browser turned on, so I downloaded the McAfee software to run Browser security. Really wanted it for Chrome but it downloaded the Edge version so I installed it.

I opened up Edge to see what it would do after install.

The popups started happening within 5 minutes and kept on going even after I cleared the notifications and even after I closed Edge.

I ran the McAfee Scan and it found nothing.

    The message looked like this.

    *************************

    Microsoft Edge

    (5) virus detected

      Click to remove

      theresults.net

    ************************

    2nd message

    Virus detected (5)

Your computer is infected with a dangerous virus.

Click "Clean the computer" to remove all the virus.

                CLEAN THE COMPUTER

    ************************************

I use to do this kind of work for IBM before I retired so I tried these steps.

    1. Rebooted PC. Same
    2. Uninstalled Edge , You cant do that but MS loads a new copy. Same
    3. Turned off McAfee browser security. Same
    4. Did your Edge reset suggestion. Fixed it.
    5. Closed Edge. Still fixed.
    6. Turned on McAfee browser security. Still fixed.
    7. Brought up Edge searched for stuff and closed Edge. Still fixed
    8. Rebooted. Still fixed.

So I repaired the issue but still do not know root cause.

I suspect it will come back again. Since it is Malware, I don't want to keep fighting the dragons. So I will not use Edge and will look for a different security program.

I had this computer running for 5 days and was installing all of my Chrome browser links in separate desktop icons. KInda old school, I am.

When I saw McAfee did browser and password security, I thought I would take a swing at this new Edge thing. Should have not stepped off the Edge. Back to polishing my Chrome.

    Hi jtmoncatar,

Apologies if the suggested methods didn't work.

Aside from deleting your browser cache and cookies, kindly try to reset the settings of MS Edge:

    1. Open Microsoft Edge and go to Settings and more (...) button from the top-right.
    2. Under the settings, click on Reset settings and select the reset option

You may also go to Settings > Apps > Apps & Features > search and select Microsoft Edge > click on Advanced options > under Reset, select "Repair" or "Reset".

Can you also check if you'll encounter the same issue when you enable the built-in administrator account:

    1. Press Windows+R on your keyboard and type "cmd" then press OK
    2. On the command prompt window, type net user administrator /active:yes and press Enter
    3. Perform a reboot, login to your admin account and try to download the file again.

Please let me know how it goes. Thank you.
