Microsoft Edge opens about:blank

It started as an occasional annoyance and ended unmanageably.  Edge now opens without being requested and immediately opens about:blank. When closed, edge immediately restarts and reopens about:blank. I have run three anti-virus programs including AVG and Webroot, but to no avail. Had to remove edge to regain control of the computer (and that wasn't easy).  Any suggestions?

Also, I'm still using Bing and Cortana but notice that bing brings up edge windows.  Is that a problem?

    Check and make sure you are using the latest version of the Microsoft Edge, you may navigate to edge://settings/help and verify it has been updated.

    Try report this issue through the feedback option , take a look at How to Report a Feedback/Bug to Microsoft Edge’s Team? - Microsoft Community 

    Try open Microsoft Edge in InPrivate browsing mode (Ctrl+Shift+N) and see if the problem persist?
