New Microsoft Edge browser creates a lot of processes for only one tab (38!)

Hello!

I have recently updated to the chromium based Edge, and I have noticed something that was not present in the last iteration, namely the high number of processes in Task Manager.

When I installed I did choose to carry over my data from Chrome, my browser of choice as I only use Edge for its built in Netflix 1080p support, so I am aware that processes are made for my extensions as well. Seeing as I only have 4 extensions added by myself, even thinking it would create 2 processes per extension, that should be only 8 or maybe 10 total processes, with maybe another two per tab. Unfortunately, I am reaching 38 processes for only one tab, wheres in Chrome where I have upwards of 10 tabs open at any given moment I only have 32.

Here are some attached screengrabs of the processes:

Is this considered normal behavior? Waiting to hear back on this.

From your screenshot, it looks like there are multiple instances of the Media Foundation Protected Pipeline EXE process in Edge. This manages DRM for Netflix.

I'm not really familiar with how the Netflix website uses this process and how it affects Edge's or your PC's performance, but Netflix might need to somehow optimize the use of this process in Edge.

    Hello,

Yes, I know how browsers sandbox everything to keep the rest running in case a tab crashes or anything of the sorts, and I've been subscribed for to the LTT family of channels for years now.

The only extensions I use are two ad blockers, one popup blocker and Honey, which I've got from LTT actually. But 38 processes for one tab seems ridiculous and this is definitely not normal behavior. Please check the second imgur link as well.

    Hello!

I'm your Independent Advisor for today. Let's figure this out and come up with a solution.

The new Edge, much like Chrome, splits off each tab and each extension into its own process, with each occupies its own space and memory. This is to ensure that the other tabs still work when one of them stop working. Most browsers nowadays use the same "sandboxing" but implement it in their own way. Right now, it's just how Edge is designed, and should be working as intended.

You can disable extensions that you don't frequently use or use the built-in browser task manager to determine which tabs or extensions are creating a lot of processes.

You can find more information about it here. This also applies to Edge since both are built on Chromium:

    Hope this helps.
