    Hi ElizabethFlorence1,

I am an independent advisor and a Microsoft user like you, and I would be happy to help you out with this.

Windows Defender provides sufficient antivirus and antimalware protection for most users. And the best part is it is free and already included in Windows 10! There is typically no need to purchase any third-party software, especially if you are cautious and careful on clicking on suspicious links/content.

For more information, please visit: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/compreh...

Sometimes if there is malware that does get through, free versions of Malwarebytes anti-malware can help detect and remove the offending items.

I hope this has helped you. Please let us know if you have any further questions and we would be happy to help!

    Regards,

    -Ashton

    Hi Elizabeth,

(IMO) that would be Windows Defender which is already built into your Windows 10 OS.

Dittos to Ashton. Malware is different than antivirus looking for trojans, etc. So run a Malwarebytes scan once in awhile alongside the real-time scanning Windows Defender does. Occasionally one can look at the percentage of viruses and malware various brands of antivirus or malware catch. There are independent testing companies that you can view the results from, available by googling same. In browser security, its slightly different to use the best blocking and malware seeking solutions. Malwarebytes Browser Guard is what I use in Firefox and Chrome, but overall I like Microsoft Edge browser because its security is pretty good by default.

All of what you said sounds reasonable except for the fact of knowing when you have malware on your computer. It sound like knowing you have malware is left to chance and no mention if Windows Defender protects against ransomware.  This sounds to me that the protection it offers is limited and leaves you computer open to intrusion. Please correct me if I am wrong

Plenty of free options including Windows 10 Defender built in. Just depends on what you goal is in protecting your device. There are plenty of reviews out there if you do a search rating how effective they are and what features they offer. Almost any free option is going to lack certain features because those developers would like to sell you their paid version.
