I was wondering why edge keep opening new tabs. When I'm searching for something I look up and got 20 tabs open. I would rather have it close the last tab and open the next. Then if I need to go back I just hit the back button.

    Hello,

I am a Microsoft Edge user and I have been suddenly facing the same issue. I searched for some solutions online and found a user's reply in another Microsoft community question. It worked for me and so I thought it might be useful for someone else.

Search for "Edge opens new tab on every link" on Microsoft edge browser. In the results page, right below the options of Images, Videos, Maps, News, Shopping etc., there is a toggle saying "open links in new tab". I switched it off, and the problem was solved.

I am not sure if it will work for everyone but might be useful for someone.

"When I'm searching for something I look up and got 20 tabs open." - regarding this, if it's strictly during a default search (Bing result), then it's a new-to-me Bing setting that's defaulting to opening results in a new tab.  You can get there by going to the hamburger menu in bing.com, click on Settings -> More -> and look under the Results section.  I de-checked the "Open links from search results in a new tab or window" and it restored it to what I'd expect behaviorally.  No clue why this was selected.  Drove me nuts. But at least for that - Bing results - you don't need any extension or plug-ins.

Good day JohnBu3! I am Independent Advisor Paul R. and also a Microsoft/Windows user like you and I am glad to be able to provide assistance to you today. I understand that you are looking into an issue in which MS Edge keeps opening new tabs whenever you are browsing or searching for something on the web. I would suggest to try an extension and check if this will help out.

    • Open MS Edge
    • Click on the 3 dots and then click Extensions
    • Look for Can't find what you're looking for? You can also get extensions from the Chrome Web Store and click on the hyperlink
    • If there is a pop-up above click on it to allow for an extension to be installed
    • Look/search for Don't Close Window With Last Tab
    • Click on it and click Add to Chrome and click Add Extension from the pop-up that will appear and this will add the extension in MS Edge
    • Click again the 3 dots and then click Extensions
    • On the Don't Close Window With Last Tab, click on Details and then Extension options
    • Tick on the Allow only one "New Tab" page in a window and click on Save (You can also check and work with settings that will suit your browsing style)
    • After doing the above, try to launch a new tab and check if this will now keep MS Edge in opening a lot of tabs

On the other hand, you can also reach out by providing a feedback with regards to this feature for MS Edge and you can do that via clicking on the 3 dots > Help and Feedback > Send Feedback.

    Regards,

    Paul R.

Thank you so much. Finally fixed an issue that's been a pain in my rear.

And a message to @Microsoft- this is garbage design. I was sitting in the setting options of your browser looking for this exact option and couldn't find. Turns out its on your search results page? WHAT!!?

People can literally turn this option on accidentally and have no idea how to fix it, especially if they decided to switch their search engine to Google.  I was this close to dropping this browser and heading back to Chrome.
