The font in the new Edge is hard to read.   some letters bolded some not.    Chrome works fine.    I went to appearance settings and changed all to times new roman, but not luck.

... font is all blurry now, like it was painted in uneven black ink

Poor font rendering is a known problem that affects some users. Please use the feedback option in the browser (press Alt-Shift-i or click ⋯ (Settings and more> Help and feedback > Send feedback) to report it; including diagnostic data will help identify the cause of it on your machine. When you do, please give your hardware configuration (no need for exact models), i.e. laptop versus desktop, external monitor, and some example sites/pages where the problem occurs. If you start your feedback with for_arvind, it will be directed to the team member working on this problem.

At the top of this forum is a Top Feedback Summary where the most common bugs, suggestions and feature requests are listed with their status. One of them is:

... so it's an issue the devs are actively working on.

Some affected users have found that turning off hardware acceleration in the browser improves the font appearance. Click ⋯ (Settings and more> Settings > Systemto change the setting for Use hardware acceleration when available.

Did you try this?  I had all the same symptoms as you. This worked for me.

1.type systempropertiesperformance.exe in Windows Run dialog.

    2. click the Adjust for best appearance radio button:

    Hello Ian Prest,

I had an Edge upgrade to 89.0.774.57 four days ago 3/19/21. Ever since, I had the problem where fonts/icons are blocky and jagged. In my case, the ClearType checkbox you mention was marked ("Turn on Cleartype" was marked). I could not check your #2 suggestion ( System Properties-search for "View advanced system settings" in the Start menu) because my organization manages that and I could not access it with my limited privileges.

However, I fixed my jagged font problem by doing this:

    1. WindowKey +R (to get Run dialog)

    2. Type systempropertiesperformance in the Run dialog.

    3. A Performance Options window appears, in which the top radio button "Let Windows choose what's best for my computer" was MARKED.

    4. I instead marked the "Adjust for bets appearance" radio button.

    5. Then exited Edge completely and re-entered it, and all fonts/icons were smooth.

    Hi Robert and oi1998:

In the screenshots you've posted, it appears that ClearType is turned off.  Can you please verify the following settings:

    1. In the ClearType Text Tuner (search for "Adjust ClearType text" in the Start menu), what is the state of the "Turn on ClearType" checkbox on the first page?
    2. Go to the System Properties (search for "View advanced system settings" in the Start menu), then in the "Performance" section click on the "Settings..." button.  What is the state of the "Smooth edges of screen fonts" checkbox?

If either of them are not checked:  Check them, then click OK (or "Next/Next/.../Finish") to commit the changes.  Then restart Edge.  This should hopefully resolve the issue.

If they are both checked already: Something else is going on.  Please file feedback using the built-in tool in Edge (Alt+Shift+I) and include diagnostic data.  In your report, say "text is aliased even though font-smoothing and ClearType are enabled on the system", which will help it get routed properly.

We are also particularly interested in the setup of your monitor(s):

    • Are you using multiple monitors or external displays?
    • Are the displays permanently connected?
    • How are monitors connected?  (Built-in to laptop, external via DisplayPort, external via HDMI, any KVM switches or docking stations, etc.)
    • If you have multiple displays, does the problem occur on all of them?
    • Do you rotate your displays (i.e., put them in the portrait orientation)?  Is this a permanent state, or do you change orientations?

    Thanks!
