Edge deleted most of my bookmark folders when I signed into a new PC.

I got a new PC at work and signed into Edge. When I turn on Sync, my bookmarks start to show up, but I noticed almost all the folders on my Favorites Bar were missing. I turned on my personal PC and they're still there.

But then about an hour later they started disappearing from my personal PC now! It's using the new PC to overwrite my old settings. This is extremely frustrating... all my bookmark folders are now gone. Edge failed to sync them, then back-synced to get rid of the ones that existed on my personal PC. So now there's no way for me to find the old bookmarks. It bugged out, then spread the bug to my personal machine that had all the settings I actually want. Crazy!

If you're quick, you may find that there's a backup of your favourites on your personal machine. It will be called Bookmarks.bak or Bookmarks.msbak in the profile directory. Open File Explorer and navigate to

    %localappdata%\Microsoft\Edge\User Data\Default

If you find a good backup file, it will be larger than the one called just Bookmarks. Save a copy of it somewhere safe, like in your Documents folder.

Then turn off sync in Edge and close it down. Make sure no instance of msedge.exe is running in Task Manager. Rename Bookmarks to Bookmarks.old and then Bookmarks.bak to Bookmarks. Then launch Edge and see whether your favourites have been restored.

Hi Skywalker. I'm Greg, 10 years awarded Windows MVP, here to help you.

See if you can System Restore to a point before the Sync'd Settings were deleted on the original source PC:

If it works then immediately turn off Edge Settings Sync:

Report back results for each step so I know what else to suggest.

Feel free to ask back any questions. Based on the results you post back I may have other suggestions if necessary.
