Edge - File downloads don't complete .tmp

Hello,

I'm looking into an unusual issue I haven't seen before. When a file is downloaded in edge its shows the green progress bar on the icon in the taskbar but the file doesn't show up in the downloads list and in the downloads folder never converts from example.tmp to example.msi but the file is complete if I change the extension manually to .msi the file works as it should. I assume it stays in .tmp format until its scanned with smart screen or defender or something? This issue doesn't happen with any other browser other than Edge

This was in version 88 but even after upgrading to 89 there was no change and is currently on Windows 10 Enterprise 10.0.19042.870

Hoping to get some ideas.

Alan

dear Ben, i'm facing the same issues too.

Most files downloaded using edge, displayed as temp.

Be it pdf, jpg or mp3.

I do not see these issues using IE or Chrome.

    Await your advise with thanx.

    Good Morning Aditya_Roy,

This happens on all files, his download history is completely empty and will not populate with any file. The downloaded files are all stored in the "Downloads" directory but as their .tmp versions.

There are no extension enabled and for the most part all are blocked with few whitelisted exceptions none of which are used in this case.

This laptop is connected to our domain

In conversation this morning it was discovered that Edge has never worked properly for him since we imaged his laptop in February, this image was widely used with only this user having issues but we also mainly use Chrome.  I forgot to answer above on the post for Frank-SE.

I just discovered this laptop should have been on Windows 1909 which is the version deployed to him but he was able to upgrade to 20H2 in February and we were still using legacy Edge, when he upgraded to 20H2 it would have forced the Edge chromium update at the same time and we are still testing chromium for deployment. Learning this now it appears I might need to do a deeper scrub after uninstalling Edge and reinstall it and hopefully was just a corrupt install.

Good Morning and thanks for the response.

We do use Digital Guardian and McAfee Host Intrusion Prevention but this is on all of our laptops and I didn't see anything within HIPS causing an issue.

    There are no extensions installed

Yes, that is where it shows the version info. It was uninstalled and then upgraded to Version 89.0.774.48 (Official build) (64-bit) but when that didn't resolve the issue it was reverted as we have not deployed v89 yet its still in testing.

I have tried resetting etc and like above complete removal and install.

    Hi Alan,

Thank you for writing to Microsoft Community Forums.

Seems that you are having difficulties in downloading files on Edge. We would like to know few things.

    • Does it happen only when you download .msi file?
    • Do you have any extension enabled in Edge?
    • Is the PC connected to a domain/organization network?
    • Are you aware of any changes on the PC prior to this issue?

    We await your response.

    Hello,

I have some questions to help narrow down possible culprits, and I have seen this issue before but most of the time it fixed itself when Windows/Edge was updated without any background issues to the latest builds.

    • Do you use any third-party protection software (Malware, Antivirus, Firewall)?
    • Do you use extensions/addons in Edge?
    • If you go to the page: edge://settings/help in Edge does it say you are running Version 89.0.774.57?
    • Have you tried any options like resetting Edge, or clearing out your browser data (Cache)?

You might have already check, but I would make sure you do have the latest updates in Windows as well.
