Improving performance and responsiveness of Edge on Windows 11
This browser is no longer supported.
Upgrade to Microsoft Edge to take advantage of the latest features, security updates, and technical support.
I use Edge and Chrome, and benchmark them regularly using Speedometer2 Speedometer 2.0 (browserbench.org) They usually had similar performance and had scores in the 22x range (i.e., from 220 to 229). The score is about how many runs per minute a browser can perform.
After upgrading to Windows 11, Edge's score dropped to 12x range but Chrome stays in the 22x range. I have tried various way to debug, including cleaning up the cache, using Windows' repair, etc. But it has not improved the Edge performance.
The overall system performance from the upgrade has not changed much. The computer has AMD 5950x CPU, Nvidia 3080Ti GPU, 64GB of RAM, and 2TB of SSD that has 1.2TB free space.
I am wondering if someone has suggestions on how to improve Edge performance.

Thanks Kevin. I did that in my debugging already. But it did not help. I also tried reset and repair Edge. But none of them helped either.
It is strange that Chrome's performance has not changed since the Windows 11 upgrade. But Edge dropped to half.
It does not work as you described though. The performance drops significantly on my computer when the web security is turned on, in either Balanced or Strict mode.
Note that I have always turned on this feature. In the past, it worked as you described. But it does not keep up the performance with this build.

The version is 96.0.1054.62 .
I think the issue is probably caused by the recent Edge security update for the web. I had this feature turned on in Windows 10 too. This feature is under "Privacy, search, and services" and "Enhance your security on the web". If I turn it off, the browser performance is similar to what it was before.
Web security is good. But it costs almost 50% of the performance.
Hi dlin95123,
What is the version number of your Microsoft Edge? You can follow the steps below.

Hi dlin95123,
Welcome to Microsoft Community and appreciate your time taken for sharing detailed information. I understand that Microsoft Edge performance drops significantly after Windows 11 upgrade. I am glad to offer you help on this issue.
Microsoft has admitted a new problem with Windows 11, which will significantly affect the speed of storage drives (SSDS, etc.).Not everyone will be affected by the problem, but Windows 11 does slow down PCS in a variety of ways, which is pretty bad. But the overall performance of your computer has not changed, and the Edge's performance has decreased. So that’s probably not the problem. By definition, your Edge should get faster when you update to Windows 11. This is Chromium-based Microsoft Edge, and the performance should not be much different from Chrome. Perhaps you need delete or update Edge extensions:
Step 1: Open Microsoft Edge and click on the three dots (…) found in the top right corner of your browser window.
Step 2: Select Extensions from the menu.
Step 3: Select each extension and click on Uninstall.
Step 4: Restart Microsoft Edge. See if your browser speed improves then go to the Microsoft Store and reinstall your favorite extensions if you still want them.
Hope this work. If any update, welcome to share with us.
