Troubleshooting browser crashes or performance issues on Windows 11
This browser is no longer supported.
Upgrade to Microsoft Edge to take advantage of the latest features, security updates, and technical support.
Whenever I or another program tries to run it, a grey window opens up and then soon closes. When I try to install it or repair it by using the "Microsoft Edge Update", the Windows Store, or "Microsoft Edge Webview2 Runtime" I receive the message:
Installer error 080000003.
The uninstall option is greyed out, probably because it's a "base" Microsoft component.
This is a new PC where one of the first things I did was upgrade from Windows 10 to Windows 11.

This PC came preloaded with McAfee antivirus.
It's fairly clear that your installation of Edge is in a mess, and I don't expect that any of your attempts to remedy it have improved the situation. The screenshot you showed of your Reset attempt is not what I would expect to see; it's the dialogue applying to Windows Store apps, not Win32 programs like Edge. Edge has its own Repair dialogue.
I'm inclined to suspect McAfee, especially if it was installed while you upgraded to Windows 11. I would urge you to uninstall it completely, using first the option at Settings > Apps > Apps and features. Follow up by downloading and running the McAfee removal tool (MCPR.exe): McAfee KB - How to remove McAfee products from a PC that runs Windows (TS101331). When you're sure it's gone, check in Windows Security that Defender is running to protect the machine. You don't need anything else.
Then I think your best bet is to download and run the installer for the latest Stable version from the business download page Dave referred you to (Download Microsoft Edge for business - Microsoft). With McAfee out of the way, it should operate more smoothly, and there should be a log file to explain each step of the process.
When I try to install it or repair it by using the "Microsoft Edge Update", the Windows Store, or "Microsoft Edge Webview2 Runtime" ...
The first thing to try is to repair the installation: Start > Settings > Apps, scroll down to Microsoft Edge and select the Modify option. Follow the prompts to repair the installation with a new download. This is a simple shortcut to downloading and running the MSI you would get by following Dave's instructions. The installer does include an uninstaller, but it can only be run from the command line.
Microsoft Edge Update is the program used by Edge to keep itself up to date. It can't be run by the user, only by Edge itself.
WebView2 is the application used by many bits of Windows and third-party apps to render HTML to give rich content. In Windows 11, Widgets are a good example. Some apps will use the version installed by default, while others may bring their own. Again, it can't be run by users.
Hi larso137
Rest assured, there is only one version of Edge, try restarting your PC and then run that installer again.
Thanks for helping Dave. I notice this is the Enterprise version of Edge, no issues using it at home?
However when I tried running the installer after about 3-4 minutes I received the error:
"There is a problem with this Windows Installer package. A program run as part of the setup did not finish as expected. Contact your support personnel or package vendor."
Hi larso137
I am Dave, I will help you with this.
Because Edge cannot be uninstalled, try installing Edge from the offline installer available on the link below:
