Windows defender *still* blocking MS Edge

Same issue as here:

Windows defender blocking MS Edge - Microsoft Community

Has there been any resolution? Eric-SE posted once but never followed up.

Not sure if it is connected, but this just popped up immediately after quitting Edge in preparation for a restart in response to this MS Teams issue:

Teams doesn't release camera or audio after meeting ends - Microsoft Community

When I look in c:\program files (x86)\microsoft\edge\application, I do not see msedge.exe.exe (see the attached screenshot). I have folders set to display hidden files and to display known file extensions.

    Hi all,

per instructions of firedog above, feedback hub post with title "msedge.exe.exe "Windows defender firewall has blocked some features of this app" issue" has been made, as I have had the issue. Link here https://aka.ms/AAil412 and a different style of link (URI) also here: feedback-hub:?contextid=871&feedbackid=43866daf-6884-483f-acf7-df55a6fce99c&form=1&src=1

... Windows might be renaming msedge.exe and adding an extra '.exe' to the end of it ...

This problem has cropped up occasionally for some users, not only with msedge.exe but also chrome.exe, dropbox.exe and others. As far as I can remember, no evidence of malware has ever been found, and no common factor has come to light. It was claimed by someone authoritative that there is a bug in Microsoft Defender that causes this, but of course I can't find the reference.

The only way to get to the bottom of this is to provide the engineers with enough data for them to investigate. That means submitting detailed feedback through the Feedback Hub; if everyone encountering the problem were to do so, it shouldn't be difficult to find what they have in common. When you submit feedback, pick up the 'share' link to it and post it here so other sufferers can add their experience.

Hey man, I've been having this problem recurring from time to time as well, it's incredibly strange to me because I've gone through malware removal processes multiple times and always find nothing...

I've had the thought that Windows might be renaming msedge.exe and adding an extra '.exe' to the end of it unintentionally, but this still doesn't explain why it occasionally asks for permission through the firewall. Denying it each time has had no repercussions for me, through my testing Microsoft Edge works fine each time.

I've attempted to uninstall Microsoft Edge in safe mode as well, but the problem has reoccurred recently and I'm left scratching my head as well. Again, the file appears nowhere, even where the firewall notification says it is...

I'm replying here in hopes that anyone who sees this follows up with more information, it'd be nice to see a resolution after having it happen to us for a while

    Hello JeremyEMatt,

    Welcome to Microsoft Community.

Thank you for the information. Applications typically exist in .exe format. Files with two exe(.exe.exe) may not be normal applications. For security purposes, I recommend that you use Microsoft Defender for a full disk scan to make sure the file is not a virus file. In addition, please right-click the Edge icon on the desktop to enter the "Properties" page, please check the "Target" column, whether there are extra characters at the end of the Edge path suffix (the correct ending is msedge.exe")

If you see extra characters at the end of the path, remove them to make sure the ending and parentheses are the same, then click Ok to exit and see if the firewall alert still has the problem.

Thank you for your patience and cooperation, if there are any updates, please feel free to let me know.

    Best Regards,

Manson - MSFT | Microsoft Community Support Specialist
