Upgrade to Microsoft Edge to take advantage of the latest features, security updates, and technical support.
Whenever I try to download an application using Edge (Version 90.0.818.51), the browser claims the application is or may be dangerous and blocks the download. One example is Tweaking.com (s) Windows Repair. Others are Rarma Radio, Tixati, Crystal Disk Info, and on and on and on. I've been using these applications for years without problems and I generally download them from their creators websites when trying to update. But i can't because Edge won't let me.
In settings, I have turned Microsoft Defender SmartScreen off and "Block Potentially unwanted apps" off, but the blocking continues. I can download with Chrome, but I hate that browser, or I could use the Brave Browser, but it won't keep my Password Manager logged in ... what a pain that is. So I can't use my favorite browser to download.

Microsoft has made the use of their browser, Edge, more difficult to use for anyone other than the casual user, one that does not download apps or update software. I understand that they are trying to keep uninformed people from downloading dangerous files, but they have failed to determine the safe files from the dangerous. They list most of these files as not commonly downloaded. Perhaps they are not commonly downloaded, but if they would check, they would find most of these files listed on major download sites like majorgeeks.com, a site that checks for "danger" prior to offering them for download. I respect majorgeeks, but I do not respect the Edge dangerous download list.
Again, thank you for your answers. They did not work for me and I've had to abandon Edge as my default browser.
My default right now is the detested and very much hated Chrome, but I do use Brave a lot. I would use Brave as default if it would remember to automatically log me in to my password manager, but it does not and my buttocks does not appreciate that pain.
Have a great day (and life) and do not let my "unhelpful" comment keep you from answering me or others in the future. I'm sure your knowledge will continue to help people in the future. Again, thank you very much.
Good day RCoover! I am Independent Advisor Paul R. and I am glad to be able to provide assistance to you today. I understand that you are unable to download a couple of files even if SmartScreen and Block Potentially unwanted apps setting is off. I have also tried it on my end with Version 90.0.818.51 and I have even turned off Windows Defender/Security as well and it is still the same and for you to be able to download the file is that you will need to click on the 3 dots once the download prompt appears and then click on Keep file and with this one if this is with regards to the recent update, you can also send a feedback to the team that is working on Edge and hopefully a fix will be applied soon on the next update and you can provide a feedback from the browser itself by clicking on the 3 dots > Help and feedback > Send feedback.
Regards,
Paul R.
I am having the exact same problems with Microsoft Edge. Up until about six weeks ago it worked splendidly and then I tried to download Acronis 2021 and was unsuccessful because it was ludicrously "this type of file could harm your device". Initially, I tried following the advice turning the Smartscreen Defender on and off, turning off the extensions and every single thing I could find on the internet, to no avail. I could, however, download games from the Microsoft Store and also zip files. On 24/06/2021, I spent 3 - 4 hours, in two sessions with two members of my antivirus team to determine if that program was responsible for blocking downloads. We eventually found that it as only exe files causing the problem on Edge. The only solution was eventually to turn off all the Windows 10 security and go to Mozilla Firefox which devours huge amounts of RAM. I wish Microsoft would fix this problem so I and many others could return to Edge.
Thank you, Paul, for your very nice reply. And yes, you are (were) correct regarding the use of the "3 dots" as I have used that in the past, but, apparently, another update has made that to no longer work. I no longer get a response from Edge that can allow the download to continue and be used. Apparently, Microsoft has decided to stop software downloads for software not approved by Microsoft, making most downloads from anywhere but the Microsoft Store not downloadable via Edge. So sadly, just today I changed my default browser to Chrome, where I can ignore "may be dangerous" responses from the browser. I guess Microsoft still thinks of all users as stupid who must be forced to do things in the Microsoft "way". As a user of Windows for 26 years, I do not think they should be forcing me to do anything. I am careful with all the software I use and really dislike being treated as a fool or as a child. I own and use several computers (at present 8) all running the most recent version of Windows and am really unhappy with what they are doing now.
I thank you very much for your answer, but it was unhelpful because it offered a solution that worked 6 months ago, but does not work now.
