unable to uninstall Yahoo and DuckDuckGo search engines

In Windows 10 - 21H1 - 19044.56 - Edge - 98.0.1108.56 - desktop, I have tried suggestions from MS about how to remove search engines, but the instructions are incorrect. A click on the 3 dots after search engine names does not display 3 options: make default - edit - remove, as MS states, only make default - edit. Remove option is not there.

All other methods are so involved and don't seem to work. Surely MS has a simple method of removing unwanted search engines a user has simply tried and does not want.

If not, why not? I'm happy with my old standbys: Bing and Google. Any suggestions?

A click on the 3 dots after search engine names does not display 3 options: make default - edit - remove, as MS states, only make default - edit. Remove option is not there.

The option to remove the pre-installed search providers was taken away a few versions ago. We were told that it would be re-instated with build 1135, but the fix hasn't yet materialized in preview versions of the browser. This may indicate that it won't be fixed. No reason was ever given for either decision.

It is really of no consequence whether there are search providers listed that you won't ever use. They would only come into play if you used the keyword to invoke them in the address bar. You can remove any search provider listed that was added automatically after you conducted a search at a website.

    Thank you, Lynn

The suggested methods you suggest were methods I tried, unsuccessfully, before seeking MS help. However too often that does not entirely remove the unwanted app. Snippets of it appear often on pc screen.

I wish to remove/uninstall an app completely, not partially, which MS makes difficult.

You are thoughtful to send advice, which I sincerely appreciate. klaro90

I agree - same problem there. You can add and edit search engines in MS Edge but not remove them. It appears my browser is constantly trying to determine the default search option and sometimes cannot decide, so that I cannot use Bing or Google. When will Microsoft add the remove option back in?

You can add and edit search engines in MS Edge but not remove them.

That's not my experience. Any search provider I add manually, and any that is added automatically when I conduct a search at a website, has the Remove option on its (More actions) menu.

... my browser is constantly trying to determine the default search option and sometimes cannot decide,

You are entirely in charge of determining the default search provider that Edge will use for searches conducted in the address bar. Only if you want to use a different one and invoke it by using its keyword will another provider be used. If you have Google set as your default provider,

    • typing a search term in the address box will send the query to Google and the page will change to a Google results page.
    • typing a keyword followed by a space in the address bar will change the contents of the box to read Search <provider> |
    • typing a search term now will send the query to <provider> and the page will change to a page at the provider's site showing the results of the search.

Here's one of my custom search providers:

This is how I use it (I happen to be viewing Google's home page, but it makes no difference which page I'm on):
