If you scan it again and no longer found any problems, then those are already fixed.

Thanks for your help. I ran the suggested program for four hours and it found 13 problems. But then it just vanished and did not give me the chance to mitigate them. I guess I need to buy it first.

Since there are already suspicious activities happening, I would suggest communicating with the bank to safeguard your account. Now, to fully check if your computer has malware, you should be able to remove them using Malwarebytes

    https://www.malwarebytes.com/mwb-download

You can uninstall it once you've scanned and removed malicious apps installed. I suggest a regular scan using Windows Defender from now on or using the Microsoft Safety Scanner tool to prevent and remove malware

Also, installing an extension like this can help so it can warn you whether a URL is safe or not

Since you think your device is compromised, I suggested all of the tools above to make sure your data is safe. I recommend checking these articles to prevent these things from happening in the future

Thanks for you reply. I had thought that Windows Defender did a fairly good job of check for unsafe website. But I ran into a bit of trouble yesterday. Here’s the story.

I wanted to login to my Bank of America https website with a fully updated Windows 10 and Edge browser. I typed the URL and got the expected https home page. I typed my user id and got asked for the password. I type the password and got asked for a verification code, which was sent to a second device and duly entered by me.

Then strange things started to happen. There was a delay and then I got asked to login again by the BofA site, and asked for the password  and another verification code. Once I entered these BofA said my account was not longer available and please call their security department.

The security department said my account had been frozen because they detected malware on my PC, whether in general or specifically in Edge, I did not find out. They sent me off to some IBM website to install some Brower safety software into Edge. I tried that and did not fee comfortable with what it was doing or the level of support, so I uninstalled it.

I then ran several versions of the scans in Windows Defender. The long version complained about “Open Download Manager”, which verified as Microsoft software, but suggested that I remove it anyway. I removed it.

BofA then changed my account name and password. I was able to use the BofA app on my iPhone and then the https website from my Windows PC. I check the account and nothing had been tampered with, as far as I could tell. In the meantime I had received an email from BofA stating:

    To: MICHAEL SCHROEDER

    Payee: Emonie Ranson

    Date Added: June 10, 2023

This payee has been added to your list of payees in Online Banking.

At Bank of America we care about your security, so for your protection we are notifying you of this activity.

If you did not intend to add this payee, please contact us immediately at 800-792-0808.

I called and no such addition to my account had occurred. I have also check online via the BofA app and could find no evidence of such an addition.

Finally, about the same time as all this was happening I received email to my normal email address from:

Tecnika Servicio *** Email address is removed for privacy ***,

Premium Herb *** Email address is removed for privacy ***; (Premium Herb via benghock.com.sg),

aircontrolsindia (Edge said could not identify the sender),

aircontrolsindia (*** Email address is removed for privacy ***) (Edge said could not identify the sender),

Princesseg.com contact us confirmation (*** Email address is removed for privacy ***),

So my question is whether Edge is somehow compromised in a way that the normal Windows Defender tools will not detect and remove.

    Many thanks,

    Mike Schroeder
