Edge syncs my Chrome bookmarks but also some other bookmarks.

Hi,

I use Chrome as my main browser and sometimes use Edge. I let Chrome and Edge synchronize bookmarks, however:

in Chrome and Edge I have 4 bookmarks that keep coming back, 2 in a personal folder and 2 in 'other favorites' folder.

When I go into chrome and delete them, they are gone for the session.

When I am in Edge and remove the 4, they pop/appear back as I am watching the bookmark section. One of the bookmarks is ancient, where is Edge getting them from? Why can't I delete these?

Hello Crasje.

Thanks for your reply.

It seems that the location of old IE favorite folder location is C:\Users*<username>\favorite* you can also try to enter Win+R and press inetcpl.cpl

open the internet option and click Delete to clean some cache of IE.

If there is anything not clear, please do not hesitate to let me know.

Best Regards,

hello Crasje

Im Juliet and Im happy to help you :)

It seems like you are experiencing a synchronization issue between Chrome and Edge when it comes to bookmarks.

I would recommend you make sure that you have properly configured the sync settings in both Chrome and Edge. Check if you have enabled the bookmark sync option for both browsers and that they are using the same account for synchronization.

To check the sync settings in both Chrome and Edge, you can follow the steps below:

For Chrome:

1. Open Google Chrome.
2. Click on the three-dot menu icon located at the top right corner of the browser window.
3. Select "Settings" from the dropdown menu.
4. In the Settings tab, click on "Sync and Google services" in the left sidebar.
5. Ensure that the "Sync" toggle switch is turned on.
6. Click on "Manage sync" to access the sync settings.
7. In the "Sync" section, make sure that "Bookmarks" is selected.

For Edge:

1. Open Microsoft Edge.
2. Click on the three-dot menu icon located at the top right corner of the browser window.
3. Select "Settings" from the dropdown menu.
4. In the Settings tab, click on "Profiles" in the left sidebar.
5. Make sure you are on the profile that you want to check the sync settings for.
6. Click on "Sync" under the "Sync your settings" section.
7. Ensure that the "Sync" toggle switch is turned on.
8. Click on "Manage sync" to access the sync settings.
9. In the "Sync" section, make sure that "Favorites" is selected.

By following these steps, you can verify that bookmark synchronization is enabled and properly configured in both Chrome and Edge.

I hope this is helpful :)

Modifying the bookmarks file directly is possible, but it's not recommended, as it can be complex and may lead to unintended consequences or data corruption. Instead, I would suggest following a safer approach to remove the old bookmarks and import your Chrome bookmarks into Edge. Here's what you can do:

1. Make a backup: Before making any changes, it's always a good idea to create a backup of your bookmarks file. Simply make a copy of the "Bookmarks" file and store it in a safe location. This ensures you can restore your bookmarks if anything goes wrong.
2. Remove the old bookmarks from Edge:

a. Close Microsoft Edge completely.

b. Open the "Bookmarks" file located at C:\Users<Username>\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Edge\User Data\Default\Bookmarks using a text editor such as Notepad.

c. Search for the old bookmarks you want to remove within the file. You can use the Ctrl+F (Find) function to search for specific bookmark names or URLs.

d. Once you've identified the old bookmarks, you can delete the relevant sections or lines associated with them. Be careful not to delete any other important data within the file.

e. Save the changes to the "Bookmarks" file.

1. Import Chrome bookmarks into Edge:

a. Open Microsoft Edge.

b. Click on the three-dot menu icon located at the top right corner of the browser window.

c. Select "Settings" from the dropdown menu.

d. In the Settings tab, click on "Profiles" in the left sidebar.

e. Click on "Import browser data" under the "Profiles" section.

f. Select "Chrome" from the list of browsers to import from.

g. Ensure that the "Favorites or bookmarks" option is checked.

h. Click on "Import" to initiate the import process.

i. Once the import is complete, check if your Chrome bookmarks are now available in Edge.

By following these steps, you can manually remove the old bookmarks from the "Bookmarks" file and then import your Chrome bookmarks into Edge. This should help you achieve the desired result without directly editing the file or risking any data loss.

Hi Juliet,

I have found out more, first, it has nothing to do with Chrome. Yesterday I turned OFF sync in my EDGE user profile and made sure ALL browsers had the correct bookmarks.

This morning I logged in and all browsers were displaying everything correctly, since I cleared stored data in Chrome I thought that might have solved it. When turning on SYNC in EDGE again, immediately the old bookmarks reappeared in EDGE (and not in Chrome).

I don't know where EDGE sync the bookmarks from but the data but there contains really old bookmarks and I have no clue where that is to delete them. Suggestions?

Update:

when I go to C:\Users<Username>\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Edge\User Data\Default\Bookmarks and open it with Notepad, I do see the 'old' bookmarks in that file. Can I:

• edit it?
• remove it and then import my bookmarks of chrome again?

What do you suggest?
