Why did chrome say "This file is dangerous, so Chrome has blocked it" on Chrome.exe file?

I accidentally moved one of my Google icons on top of the other (I was trying to move it to the Recycling Bin because I already have another Google icon on my desktop). When I put the Google icon on the other, Google chrome opened. On the top left corner, it said something like "Chrome.exe. This file is dangerous so Chrome blocked it." It also said I downloaded something. What happened and did I download something dangerous on Chrome?

    Hello, GOAT432

    Welcome to Microsoft Community.

Based on the current section that seems to be more applicable to Microsoft Edge, currently you accidentally triggered the download of the Chrome.exe file, which is the executable file of the Chrome browser. Chrome may have blocked this file, either because it detected that it was installed on your computer, or because it suspects it to be corrupt or malicious.

According to the guidelines of the Google community:

Chrome has a built-in security feature called Safe Browsing that protects you from harmful downloads and websites. Sometimes this feature may block files that are actually safe, but if you are sure the file you are downloading is not dangerous, you can disable it it.

Or you can try to post this uncommon problem on the Google community, they may be more suitable for Chrome browser support.

Thanks for the reply I really appreciate it. But I think it was downloading something because when I tried to edit Chrome, it said “Exit or continue downloading.” I exited anyway. But when I checked the download history for chrome nothing was there. Usually it would say something like “Download failed. Retry?”

Any explanation for this, or is this normal?

There are some types of file that you can open by dropping them on to the icon of the program you want to use to open them. For example, if you have both an Adobe Reader icon and an Edge icon on your desktop, you could drop the icon for a PDF file onto either of them to have it open in the program you chose. You seemed to have dropped an icon for Google Chrome onto a different icon for Chrome; the second one thought you were trying to open a file - chrome.exe - and refused to do so, because .exe files can be dangerous if they're not treated properly. You didn't download anything, and you have nothing to worry about. Just be thankful that Chrome is taking care of you.
