Opening and reading PDF files in Microsoft Edge on Windows 11
This browser is no longer supported.
Upgrade to Microsoft Edge to take advantage of the latest features, security updates, and technical support.
In Windows 10 I finally found how to open PDFs in Adobe (my default) . But when I upgraded to Win 11, PDFs again open only in Edge. All updates are done, and I do have Adobe set again as my default PDF reader. But when I click on a PDF document, again it UNFORTUNATELY downloads in Edge, not in my default Adobe. I see that it took many people a long time to figure this out in Windows 10. But it’s different in Win 11.
How do we make PDFs download AUTOMATICALLY in Adobe , NOT in Edge ? This is driving us crazy , so much so that it made Edge unusable for me.
Please help. Like many other users I too am desperate.

Hi Greg,
Many thanks for your detailed input. I did go through each step you give. The solution works in Win 10 but fails in Win 11. I asked friends to go through your steps in case I was doing it wrong . But each friend also had the same problem.
In Win 11, if one is using Edge, yes, PDS’s will open in Adobe, but open in a separate tab within Edge-- this notwithstanding that you have Adobe as the default app for .pdf. . The PDF doc does have a dialog (top right-hand side of doc) “... [click here] to open the doc in desktop application”. The problem is that if you have 25 or more PDF documents to open per session (as I do) , you have 25 plus tabs open in Edge. The latter is unmanageable as I typically have dozens of sites open that I need to keep active. This makes Edge EXTREMELY unwieldy for me, and I think for many other users too. Neither Chrome nor Firefox impose such a troublesome method on a user who has Win 11. (In Win 10, it took me a long time, but I finally figured out how to have PDFs open directly in Adobe).
Therefore, I think you are right that this could be a bug in Edge if one is using Win 11. I will report the bug the way you suggest.
Many thanks for your efforts ; much appreciated.
Adam
Hello Adam, I'm Greg, here to help you.
There are two ways normally to fix this:
If you want to report this bug to Edge Developers in the Edge Hub (three dots to right of URL address bar) then Help & Feedback, then Feedback form to fill out. They may not even see it here.
Others who find this thread are also strongly urged to report it to Edge in the Edge Feedback hub, so it helps to get developer's attention to customers still having this problem and gets action.
Feel free to ask back any questions. Based on detailed results you post back I will have other suggestions if necessary.
