Notification of virus prompting download of McAfee

Hi,

I'm writing on behalf of my parents, who are elderly and not very computer literate. They have a laptop using Windows 11. Microsoft Edge is the only browser they use.

Since Friday 13th October 2023 they have been receiving pop-up (banner) notifications from what appears to be McAfee Antivirus advising that a Trojan virus has been detected, and to download/renew subscription to assist.

Using TeamViewer to assist remotely I have done the following:

I've searched the laptop; McAfee is not installed. The only antivirus in use is Windows Security.

I've performed a full Windows Security scan, but found nothing.

I've run a full MalwareBytes scan, which hasn't found anything.

I've looked at Edge extensions to see if anything has been added recently, but nothing.

I've looked through add/remove programs but cannot find anything newly downloaded or suspicious looking.

The only thing I can find relating to this issue is in Notifications, (the most recent - at the very top): antiodenifal.co.in (via Microsoft Edge)

(I attempted to upload a screen shot - I'm not sure whether or not it has)

I've switched off all notifications for this"antiodenifal.co.in (via Microsoft Edge)", and therefore they have stopped. However, I haven't been successful discovering what this program/virus/malware is and where it is located. There is nothing on the internet about this.

Does anyone know what this "antiodenifal.co.in (via Microsoft Edge)" is, where it is located on the laptop, and how to get rid of it?

Thank you.

    Hi Dave,

Yes, it was listed under that page.

I have now set Edge to clear site permissions on exit - I did this via 'Clear Browsing Data on Close'. This has solved the issue. The antiodenifal.co.in (via Microsoft Edge)" is no longer showing on the Edge Site Permissions / Notifications page nor is it showing on the Notifications in Windows Settings.

Thank you for the assist - it's much appreciated. My apologies for not uploading a screenshot; every time I tried it failed.

    All the best,

    M.

    1

Open Edge, then click the 3 dots at the top right and open Edge Settings.

Type Notifications in the search box

On the right, scroll down and click Notifications

Are there sites, including that one listed there to allow notifications and can you remove them all from there?

Please provide a screenshot of where you see that site listed in the Settings panel as if it's a software/program

    Hi Dave,

    Thanks for responding.

I've disabled the notifications from the Windows 11 Notifications & Actions panel in Settings, and the notifications have stopped. However, the "antiodenifal.co.in (via Microsoft Edge)" is still listed in this Settings panel as if it's a software/program. I'd like to get rid of it completely.

HI, I am Dave, I will help you with this.

Those notifications are not an indication the PC is infracted, they are just spam advertisements. usually caused by a blad link on some website that previously caused a redirect.

If you have disabled notifications from ant strange websites in Edge, has that stopped the notification totally?

    Hi Dave,

We might be on to something here.

In Edge Settings, under site permissions there is "antiodenifal.co.in". There are other websites there, too - ones which I recognise. I cannot see a way of removing them, only adjusting permissions for things like location, camera, microphone, etc.
