New tabs in Chrome use yahoo as search instead of google

I have Google set up as my primary search tool in Chrome and when I open Chrome, indeed Google comes up and works as expected. However when I open new tabs a 'Google like' window comes up (an odd space cartoon with a search line below it and short cuts below that). Then when I type in a search request the system automatically uses Yahoo as the search engine instead of Google. This is rather annoying and forces me to select google from my bookmark bar before I search in new tabs.

Similarly, on MS Edge my home page is Google and works fine when I open it, however the new tabs alway pull up the MS Edge Start window and not Google. And likewise I have to select my bookmark bar short cut to Google before I can perform a google search.

Any advice on how to fix this?

I am glad the Edge information was helpful at least.

in Chrome, please check that the search engine has not been changed to yahoo.

    go to chrome://settings/search

make sure that Google is selected in the dropdown next to "Search engine used in the address bar."

you can remove the Yahoo Search engine if you wish by clicking on "Manage search engines and site search", clicking the ellipsis (...) to the right of Yahoo and selecting Delete.

If it is still a problem you could reset Chromes settings but you will need to set your preferences again. (your Bookmarks, History an Saved passwords will be unaffected.

    go to chrome://settings/reset

click on "Restore settings to their original defaults"

    then click reset settings.

it does not sound like a browser hijacker but it wouldn't hurt to perform a full scan with whatever antivirus / antimalware solution you use

    Hi,

This is two different things, that are not connected.

    1. in Chrome go to chrome://extensions/

and look to see if there is a Yahoo extension installed, if there is either turn it off or removed it and see if that helps.

    1. Edge, this is a little more complicated.

the Start page, Home page and New Tab page are all handles separately.

The Startup page(s), launched when you first start Edge can be set to any URL you like in edge://settings/startHomeNTP

The Home button shows your chosen URL when you click the Home button.

you will need to turn the Home button on and set the URL.

The New tab page requires an extension to change the URL but, it can be customised and you can make it use google when you enter a search string.

lets start by making it use Google.

    1. check that Google is set as your default search engine in Edge

    go to edge://settings/searchEngines

locate Google in the list if it does not have (default) next to it, click the ellipsis (...) to the right and select "make Default"

    1. set edge to use the default search engine in the address bar

    go to edge://settings/search

select Google (default) from the dropdown next to "Search engine used in the address bar."

3.set Edge to Search using the address bar on New tabs

in the same page, select "address bar" from the dropdown next to "Search on new tabs uses search box or address bar"

The new tab page will still look the same but will now search using Google and not Bing.

if you want to remove the news content etc.

on the new tab page, click the gear icon in the top right corner.

you can turn of the quick links (the shortcut tiles) if not using them

you can turn off the weather (shown on the top right of the new tab page).

and select content off under "Content" to remove the news,

That will leave just a picture and the search box, the picture can also be removed if you prefer.

This sounds like a browser hijacker. I would run and antivirus software right away.

    Martmcd,

As for Chrome: The only extensions I have are McAfee; Paypal Honey; & Camelizer... No indications of Yahoo. Problem still exists.

As for the MS Edge. Your guidance helped. Seems a bit strange to me that MS allows one to choose a start-up URL and define a Home screen URL, but when you simply select a new tab, they insist on MS Start page with little or no news/weather links and yet they still allow you initiate searches utilizing a separate engine.

    Thanks for the Edge help.
