also set every option in settings > default apps to chrome, I know edge tries to sneak itself in by remaining the default for some links but everything is now set to chrome except MAILTO (which is set to outlook)

oh I figured it out already lol, the new messenger is an edge web app, just uninstall it and keep messenger.com in a chrome tab for now I guess
