Is it possible to remove search from the address field in Edge?

I occasionally use Edge for Linux (not MacOS, but that option wasn't available), and one thing that causes me problems is that is I enter an address in the address field without specifying the protocol, for example something.somewhere.com, it automatically searches for the string on the default search engine. Can I turn this feature off, like you can in Firefox, so that:

  • The browser first tries to navigate to that address
  • If it fails, it simply gives an error message

This used to be the normal behaviour in the past for browsers.

You can disable the search functionality in the address bar of Microsoft Edge. Here are the steps to do so:

    1. Open Microsoft Edge on your PC.
    2. Click on the Settings and more button (three dots in the upper right corner).
    3. Select Settings from the dropdown menu.
    4. Go to the Privacy, search, and services tab.
    5. Scroll down and click on Address bar and search.
    6. Turn off the toggle for Show me search and site suggestions using my typed characters.
